I frowned, feeling that I had heard such a thing before, perhaps even from my darling who loved riddles, both learning them and making me suffer by asking me the especially hard ones.

And like I did with him¸ I asked the only pertinent question when you need to stall for time: “do I get clues?”

It pondered the question for a few heartbeats before shaking its head in the negative. “It wouldn’t be fair. It’s much too easy.”

‘For you!’ I wanted to return but preferred to keep my peace. Instead, I concentrated on what I knew: ‘A mouth that cannot eat? That means it’s not any animal or creature. A cave…maybe? Has legs but cannot move? That’s even worse! And it has a bed but cannot sleep…can a cave have a bed?’ I racked my brain for a few minutes with no apparent end in sight.
