The plan was refreshingly simple.

We would travel by horse, from post to post, southward all thought the empire until we crossed what remained of the yellow river, which was our border with the ancient province of Liang. The province had shrunk from what it was due to most of its territory becoming a lifeless desert, but, further south, once one reached the Yangtze River, it became Wu territory.
