A tense cease Part III

(From Qin Shi Huang’s perspective)

It was the sixth day of the siege and the second since we had opted to come out and play. Casualties were piling up on both sides, but so far, our steel armor, shields, and weapons gave us an edge. One that was dwindling against the unthinkable number of enemies before us.

The kid I had saved yesterday was felled today. I had warned him to stay close to me, but he had not listened. And now I found myself fighting against a horde, my back set against that of another of my fellow soldiers. The woman’s name was Haoran, and she was a formidable figure wielding a mace in her hand. She and I were the only remaining soldiers of our unit, waiting for a new batch to be dispatched to help us out.

“Huang, catch!” my companion shouted, tossing something my way, and I grabbed it absentmindedly. Only when it was in my hand and I realized what it was did I let out a shout.
