Chapter 18

I notice a thick patch of smoke in the air and my expression changes, he notices and releases me to see what I was seeing. His eyes hold fear, "shit!!" He curses,

"Eris! Eris!! Where are you?!! Help me please!!" I hear Cody screaming for help, screaming for me.

"Cody??! I'm coming!!!" I'm about to dash off but he holds me back,

"Eris!! What's wrong?!?" He is worried to death,

"My brother!! Cody needs me!!" I panic and he could see the fear in my eyes. I break free from his grasp and run in the direction of my house dropping my phone in the process.

Daylon dials a number and it picks, "10th house on Blue Avenue, it's an emergency, a fire outbreak." The line cuts and he picks up my phone from the ground. He dashes in the direction I ran in hoping that I was okay.

I near the burning building and see my parents and Tiffany coming out of it coughing and gasping, mom is trying to calm Tyler down as the fire rages on,

"Where's Cody??!!" I almost scream at the top of my lungs, tears sting my eyes,

"Cody is still trapped in the house" Tiffany coughs out, tears staining her cheeks. She just wanted her brother safe.

Without another word I dash into the blazing house, our living room was an inferno version of what it was. I cough hard trying to navigate myself around the blazing pieces of our roof that had caved in and trying to find my brother.

"Eris!! Help me!! I'm stuck in my room!!" I hear his voice once more and find my way to his room. I see him crouched in a corner holding his action figure praying for the fire to magically vanish, "Cody!"

"Eris!! I'm here!!" He answers and soon my image comes into his view. I hug him tight and caress his hair,

"Don't worry, I'll get us out of here" I reassure him with a kiss on his forehead, my eyes search his room frantically looking for the safest route to take. I pick him up and saddle him around my waist, I move a few steps to the door, and to my surprise, a piece of the ceiling falls almost landing on us. Cody is so scared that he drops his toy unknowingly,

"Eris, let's take the window" he suggests in fear, afraid of the fire,

"It's too high, you might get hurt" my eyes on the door, "I have an idea" I tuck Cody under my shirt and tell him to wrap his arms and legs around my torso, he complies and I move slowly and carefully through the fire and out the door.

I feel his tears stain my back as I navigate us to the exit, I cough and gag as the smoke forcefully penetrates my lungs, "don't cry Cody! We'll be fine!!" My voice was shaky and dry, "Nothing will happen to you!!" The tears sting my eyes, "I'll protect you with my life!!!!" The tears fall down my cheeks as I hear his sobs get louder.

We reach a large flaming portion of the ceiling that was blocking our path, Cody realizes he left his action figure behind. He lets go of my body and wiggles out, "Cody!!" I scream at him and drag him close to me as a part of the ceiling almost falls on him, "are you crazy!!" I scold him,

"I left my green lantern behind Eris!!" He cries.

I can see the door just after the burning wood, I look into his eyes and my heart aches. I kick the wood with everything in me and it breaks into pieces, "Run Cody!! Get out of here!!" I push him towards the door,

"Eris but-"

"Just run!!!"

With tears he flees out of the building and I proceed back inside to look for his toy hoping he wasn't engulfed by the flames already.

Cody reaches outside and the first person he hugs is Tiffany, "it's okay" she pets him, "you're safe now" she tries to calm his uncontrollable tears.

A fire brigade's truck arrives and tries to put out the fire with water and Daylon arrives almost out of breath, "where's Eris?!" His eyes holding fear, my family had no idea who he was and how he knew me so didn't feel the need to answer him but Cody speaks up,

"Eris is still inside, she went back to get Green lantern" Cody sobs uncontrollably and hugs Daylon. Daylon couldn't believe his words.

He couldn't believe I would do such.

"Hey kid relax, she'll be okay" he manages to get him to stop crying, Cody looks into his emerald eyes,

"Who are you?" He asks so innocently,

"Daylon. I'm Eris' friend" he answers Cody and this raises the eyebrows of Tiffany and my parents but Cody finds comfort in him and hugs him tighter.

I finally manage to find his toy and thankfully for a reason I cannot explain it isn't damaged. I tuck it under my shirt to protect it from the raging flames, I try to pave an escape route but I fall to my knees, having inhaled too much smoke, my head begins to spin as I cough violently forcing tears down my cheeks, "Cody" I whisper.

The firemen change from water to fire extinguishers and results are more visible,

"Is everyone out of the building?" A fireman asks,

"Yes everyone" my mother quickly answers in a low tone to make sure neither Daylon nor Cody heard, "Finally we can get rid of her," she says in her heart,

"Why isn't Eris back yet?" Cody peers into Daylon's eyes with concern,

"I bet she's almost out" he pets him but he couldn't help but wonder why the firemen aren't getting in to help her. He stands and approaches one of them but is cut midway by Tiffany,

"I've never seen you around here before, how do you know Eris?" She questions him and his intentions,

"She's my friend" Daylon catches the sneer in her voice and defends himself. He didn't like her already.

I crawl out of Cody's room and to the living room, my strength is almost gone and my vision is a blur, "I can't" I gasp out, my weakness overtaking me.

Would I die in a fire?

I slowly open my eyes to the woman's figure. She had the most revealing clothing ever hugging her sumptuous body tightly, her jet black hair shines even in the flames and her purple orbs enchant my soul. The most captivating thing about her is the pair of black wings that adorned her being.

Is this real?

"I can't lose you again" she whispers and a dark sphere forms in her palm and slowly enters my being. I slowly and steadily rise to my feet with strange energy resonating within me clutching the toy to my chest.

I move through the flames weakly only to realize the raging fire was now cool to touch. I had never experienced something like this and I still couldn't believe it was true. I'm almost at the door, I turn back to look at her,

"Thank you" I mutter with my strength almost gone. Her orbs reflect a mother's love and tears fall, she smiles and walks into the house disappearing into the flames.

"Eris!! Eris!!!" Cody calls into the flames. His anxiety getting the better of him he rushes to look for me but is stopped by his father. He screams and yells and kicks but couldn't break free, "Eris!! I don't want green lantern anymore! I want you! Eris come back!!" He cries and screams but no answer, he feared the worse.

"Eris!!" Daylon screams my name but gets no response,

"I thought you said no one was inside!!" One of the firemen yell at my mother and Daylon overhears,

"I thought no one was inside" she lies. A sudden rage builds inside Daylon, he was about to confront her until he notices my figure staggering out of the door,

"Eris!!" He rushes to me and catches me just as I was about to fall, I eventually fall on him, unconscious. Green lantern falls from my hand and Cody notices, he rushes over to my body and shakes me violently,

"Eris get up!! Please!! I'm sorry!!" The tears flow down his cheek into my face,

"Her pulse is dropping fast!" Daylon panics after touching my wrist, he scoops my body up in haste, his heart rate increasing, "we need to get her to a hospital!"

The fire is extinguished and I'm rushed to the hospital.

Who is she? The woman in the fire.

She is an angel.
