Chapter 2

"Funny how when the heartbreaks the logic gets to work."

Emma said goodbye to the little boy and his mother after she dropped them off at their new house, it was a small residence in Rosewood; as she and Alexander walked away, the little boy watched them with awe until his mother called him down for dinner. For once they were truly happy, with food in them and no need to worry for their safety.

Dinner with Alexander was a quiet affair, she knew he was annoyed but she does not know what she did.

"Is there something wrong, Alexander?"

Alexander sighed, before looking at Emma, "Nothing is wrong. You're just overthinking."

"Oh, umm, I was wondering if I could go out and spend a few days at a friends house?"

Alexander gazed into his tea, there was a moment of silence, "Which friend?"

"Just a friend."

"Do I know this friend of yours?"

"No, you don't."

"Then why do you think I am going to let you out if you don't tell me?"

"Am I allowed to go?"

Alexander felt irate, "Tell me who they are."

"It's just a few days, we've met them before!"

"Then just tell me who it is."

Emma got up and walked over to Alexander, she kissed him gently, calming him down.

"A delightful woman who is a good friend of John Abelard."

Alexander looked intensely into her brown eyes, "Alright then."

Alexander watched with a dejected heart as the carriage rolled away. He stayed at the doorway, looking up into the sky he saw that it was drizzling, with leaden clouds. Smiling wryly, the weather truly matched with his mood, he believed.

Turning his back to the outside, he walked back into the house and into his office to finish off some documents before practising his role. Taking off his jacket, he hung it up before walking into Emma's office.

He seldom ever went into her workplace, only doing it when she was away.

As Alexander walked into the office he admired the level of neatness and order that was maintained. Sitting down at the desk, he opened the top drawer and in it was one of his more favoured reads. It was composed by Mila Malfoy, they only issued three works but they were astonishingly well known. He believed it due to the author wanting the book to be available to everyone.

She reads it too, he thought. Smiling as he brushed over the cover, a finger trailing over the little tabs that were poking out from the side of the book. Curious, he opened it and was amazed by how much writing was coating the sides; examining it closer he found that these were comments, either evaluations or whimsical comments at certain sections of the book. Leaving it tenderly on the desk, he goes through the second drawer, this time, it was filled with a few notebooks filled with tabs and papers hoarded into it messily.

Alexander spent the time going through all the papers, enraptured with the writing and the poetry that was scrawled down on the papers. The journals embraced many different amazing universes; the detail, the depth and care that had gone into them, left Alexander spent. When he finished reading them he was overcome with tremendous sorrow, all the works that he had read so far had an element of truth in them, she had told him previously, maybe that's why the works feel so sincere and genuine.

Leaning back into the chair, he took a long breath; a knock sounded at the door.

"Come in."

Bella came in, she bowed, "Dinner is ready."

Alexander nodded whilst looking out the window, the clouds rolling through the sky, "Thank you, I will be down in a bit."

The calm before the storm.

Emma groaned as she felt the tip of the rapier against her cheek and Jane standing above her.

"You have lost again. But, you have improved greatly since the last time I saw you."

"Thank you."

"But faster movements are needed. It will be all for today, I believe that you have to get back to him tonight?"

"Yess, I do. The carriage will arrive at five this evening."

Jane nodded, "Shall we go and grab something to eat? I am sure that the servants have made something for us."

Jane and Emma headed back where they talked about various things.

"They've been getting bolder haven't they?"

Jane smiled, it was a cold one, "Yes, yes they have. I was wondering if you'd like to give me a favour?"

Emma chuckled, "Anything for a friend."

"Mind bringing me his head?"

Emma made no response but the glint in her eyes was an answer for Jane.

"This is why no one would want to be our friends," Emma said whilst laughing.

"True, but all the rest are quite boring. But then most of them are not even allowed to speak because their husbands are controlling; what irks me, is that some like it. They think that is true affection."

Emma nodded in agreement.

A maid walked in, "Sorry for disturbing Mrs Jane and Mrs [Last Name], but your carriage is here."

"Thank you."

[Name] got out of the carriage and tipped the driver, laughing when she saw Alexander waiting for her at the top of the steps, beaming.

When she finally got to the top she drooped into his arms, "Did you miss me?"

Alexander smiled into her hair, "Always."

"You flatter me. Anyways, what have you been up to?"

"Nothing much, just the usual things. Although, I am sure you have much more interesting things to say than I do."

[Name] rolled her eyes, "You never talk much."

"Yet you know me better than most do."

"Because I can get through that unbearable front of yours."

Alexander drew her close, "You love it."

"Of course I do."
