39. Daughter
Mark paused for a moment as he looked at Luca with disbelief.
"So she is the daughter of the genius traitor from District 4, huh?" Mark said with a mocking expression.
He was quiet for a minute before a glint of greed began to fill his red eyes.
"Tell me the reason you need to gain the girl's trust," Mark said with anticipation in his voice. Irene smiled when she saw the greed in Mark's face. She had expected this. Something that could change the man's decision was another offer with greater benefit for him.
His awful mood vanished instantly. His eyes gleamed as they were talking about something profitable.
"I heard that sir Cannon has several important findings on Canara research that he wrote in his journal. He only published and shared a quarter of his findings with his fellow researchers since he was afraid his findings would bring disaster. I think his daughter might be the one to keep the journal or know where the journal is located. She is sir Cannon's daughter. The man must pass on the book to his lineage." Luca said, looking at his father waiting for his approval.
Mark's smile got wider when he heard what Luca said. He could have guessed what Luca's following statement would be.
"I know that you want to say, son," Mark said with a smirk.
"You can do whatever you want with the girl as long as you can get the journal. Just tell us if you need anything. But don't make me wait too long. Two years is the limit. It's better if your plan could end faster than that," Mark said with satisfaction.
When his son gets his hand on the journal, their family will regain another level of affluence. The legendary journal would fall on their hand, and even the people from District 1 would beg on their feet to read some pages from the journal. They might even become the best district in the entire Atlan.
"What about your plan?" Mark looked at Irene. His mood improved tremendously after listening to his son's plan.
"Our insiders said that everything goes according to the plan. The higher-ups from district 5 have realized that their oil supplies start to dwindle. Although they were too late since our people have found a way to bribe and threaten the 7 Senate of District 5. Those people will help us persuade the District 5 elders to make a pact with our district. They will agree to everything we want." Irene said with a smile.
"Have you told others about this?" Mark asked.
"We are the first people to know about this. I will make a report to the senates and elders of District 2 after this." Irene said in a relaxed manner.
"Great. We need to be extra careful about this. Atlan Council will definitely meddle in if they heard about this." Mark said as he nodded his head.
Irene looked at the man with satisfaction. Although she was sometimes fed up with Mark's childish attitude, she could not deny that the man was one of the most prominent figures in their district. His pureblood made him directly gain his position as one of the senates in District 2. Although she must say that she hated to please the man every time even though he was her son-in-law.
The four of them then talked for some time before Luca got a call that he needed to go back to the office for an urgent matter. Irene decided to go back with Luca since she needed to make a secret report to the elders in District 2.
Silence filled their trip back to the castle. Unlike Irene's terrible mood when they headed to Winter's family residence, their way back home was more relaxed after talking to Mark.
Irene was also still surprised at how easily Luca could persuade Mark. She thought Mark would never agree to this kind of plan. She looked at Luca with pride. She was really happy that Luca was her grandson and not the other. She would never dream of getting higher than this, but Luca talked like everything was easy to achieve.
Irene turned to look outside the window as she started to think about everything.
Canara is a new quarry that was just found in District 3 around twenty years ago. It was in the form of a diamond and had a red blood color. Unlike other crystals, Canara contains tremendous energy that even a piece of Canara with the size of an adult fist can provide a district power supply for six months.
Unfortunately, this energy was hazardous and unstable. A person can turn to ashes in a matter of a second if they touch a piece of Canara.
Canara needed to be stabilized first before it was used as the power supply. The stabilizing process was not an easy task for the researchers.
Five years after Canara was found, a researcher named Mathew Cannon became famous since he could assist the researcher's team to stabilize the first Canara. Not only that, the man was making some breakthroughs in his research of the unstable energy of Canara.
He made some bold statements that became a hot topic at that time. One of them was that he believes that Canara will bring a new era where every human could possess the power of the sorcerers.
In the end, he was caught for conducting a Canara experiment on humans. He departed to Zone B before ending his own life there.
Irene remembered she also heard some interesting stories from their informant about the man at that time.
Mathew Cannon was an innocent victim. Many people joined hands to frame him to take the journal about Canara. Some Senate from District 3 were also the ones to contribute the pitiful man doom. They closed their eyes to the man's pitiful life.
The man's tragedy was actually the result of his own idealism. Mathew Cannon did not want to share his findings on Canara. He only wrote all his findings in a journal. The journal later became a treasure many people were fighting for. People then started to become greedy and decided to eliminate him to snatch the journal.
Unfortunately, the journal was gone and was never seen again after the man moved to Zone B and died there.
