Even 'Xavier' was also him, but he was also not him. He was Xie Qifeng not Xavier. Xavier had the freedom to do everything he want and feel everything he want.

But not Xie Qifeng who doesn't have the freedom Xavier has.

His regret is when he is suspicious toward him and could not save him when he needs.
