"Aah, aaahhh" Yukki breathed heavily, gasping for air. Leonard and Yukki began to run towards the scene, though Yukki grew too tired so they walked the rest of the way.
"Stop!" A police officer stopped the siblings, seeing that they were coming straight into the scene. "What happened here!?" Leonard desperately asked.
"Calm down!" The police officer made sure to block the way, "This is the scene of a murder! Some local gang members murdered the shop owner here in broad daylight! Entry is NOT allowed!"
"WHAT!?" Yukki couldn't help but immediately scream out, "YOU MEAN ELDER ZHOU!?" She tried to run forward but was held in place by Leonard. She desperately looked around, not even knowing what she's looking for.
The police officer, seeing this reaction, realized it would have been better if he simply kept his mouth shut. He sighed, "Look, guys, you really can't come in, please just go home, we will do our best to track down the criminals and bring them to justice."
The officer sighed, he knew he shouldn't, but he couldn't help but give a warning, "You should be careful. Something happened with the local gang here. We don't know the specifics, but they call themselves the Silver Nights, and they are very unreasonable and violent. Watch out for them, and be sure not to get caught up in gang wars."
Leonard stayed silent. Looking upon the scene in shock. He stared blankly, as his vision slowly became unnaturally dark and cloudy before his vision returned to normal in the blink of an eye. Yukki stopped and processed the information. Elder Zhou was murdered? "....." Yukki started trembling until her legs gave out and she fell to her knees.
"GOD WHY!" She yelled as she slammed her fists on the ground.
"Zhou…" Leonard didn't know what to say…he himself was just processing what had happened. And he knew, there was nothing he could say that could make the pain go away.
He wrapped his arms around her in a tight embrace and gently patted her back.
"Why-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y" Yukki whined. "Why… Why…. Why…. why....this world..." She sobbed into Leonard's shirt. "This world… just kill me now…what if I lose you too..."
As she sobbed and sobbed, she suddenly broke the embrace and held her stomach. Bloop. She kept her mouth sealed shut as she ran to the closest tree and started throwing up. Very quickly, there was nothing left for her to vomit but her body kept forcing her to try, as she stood there convulsing.
As her vomiting subsided, she looked up meekly at Leonard.
Leonard held her and sighed, "Can you walk? I can carry you home if need be." Yukki looked up at her brother, with a pitiful face wrapped in sadness, discomfort, fear, and hopelessness. "I'm… I'm sorry." Yukki muttered as she fell into his arms.
"No need to be sorry," Leonard said as Yukki mounted his back.
Yukki quietly responded, "I'm sorry for everything."
...............….
Moments Later…
With Yukki having gone to bed, Leonard sat up in worry. He couldn't show it in front of Yukki, but he was breaking down. "Sigh…" Leonard held his head. 'Today was disastrous. But what could he do? Yukki was depending on him, he HAD to keep his calm.'
Leonard frowned, 'I don't like what Yukki said today.'
"Just kill me now?" Those were worrying words. Yes, perhaps she may have said it in the spur of the moment, running out of words to express her feelings, but…these things are worrisome. At the very least, he had to say something to her tomorrow morning before he leaves for work. Or would he even go to work? He didn't know anymore.
"How can I continue on like this? To think that I even considered joining a gang earlier. And now look! Guess who's responsible for Elder Zhou's death. Why, the new local gang, of course!"
'Silver Nights? Who would ever feel safe joining a gang? Not to mention, they killed Elder Zhou. Even if I was part of them, what sort of things would they have me do? Rob and kill innocents?
Disgusting and evil behavior, I would never do that.'
...Right?
…' Actually… would I mind?' Leonard stopped. 'What was I thinking? How could I not mind!?' He tried to stop this train of thought! He shook his head, but the truth still remained. No matter how he tried to convince himself that he was wrong for not feeling repulsed at the thought of harming the innocent, he couldn't think of any other way.
Leonard came to a realization. There were only two people he cared about in this world, and now, that number had been cut in half. As long as Yukki was fine, it was enough. It was what he wanted. Why should he care about anyone else?
'Harming the innocent and all that is bad… But why should I care? What has this world ever done for her? THEY aren't Yukki. They will never understand the pain she's been through. Caring for random strangers, is just the bullshit society preaches, and yet don't do themselves.'
Leonard's gaze became resolute as he came to a conclusion in his heart, before sighing again. "Even if I gain the heart of a demon, I'm still not joining the Silver Nights. They are too dangerous to even consider joining, Yukki would be thrown right into their headlights…"
Leonard shook his head. There was just too much stress on him. From Yukki's illnesses, the new gang, and Elder Zhou's deaths, to the strange headaches and visions he keeps getting. What he needs now is a night's rest.
...............
The night passed, peacefully, and it was soon morning, but the next day was destined to be anything but peaceful. They would make sure of it.
As the siblings ate breakfast, Leonard thought back to his thoughts from yesterday. 'Money… money… How could he get money? Even if he wanted to steal, how and who would he steal from? Potential targets are things he would have to look out for while on his way to and from work.'
After they finished eating, Leonard looked at Yukki. "Can you come here for a moment?"
"Yeah?" Yukki walked up to Leonard. He held her hands gently. "We've been through alot. Yesterday was the biggest shock of our lives, and I know the future looks grim..." He tightened his grip on Yukki's hands, "However, as long as we have each other, everything is fine. Yukki… you've always been the person I care about the most, and now, the only person I care about in my life."
Yukki's heart dropped as the events from yesterday were brought up again, "Leo…" She looked up at Leonard and smiled, "and-" She stopped for a moment and her smile disappeared, "We just have too many problems…"
"Yes…" Leonard frowned, "I'll do my best to gather money for your treatment, alright? With all your...conditions, we can only do our best."
Leonard was not hopeful in the slightest. Even if he had money, that wouldn't necessarily ensure that his sister would be fine. And, he barely had any money. All he can do is try.
With that in mind, Leonard started leaving for work.
"Have a nice day at work!" Yukki smiled unnaturally wide as she waved at her brother. He smiled, "Make sure to have a good day at school, Yukki!." as he watched her board her bus and disappear out of his sight.
'Yukki.. I've always been worried that she may get bullied, harassed, even assaulted at school, especially now that she's been getting weaker and weaker for a while. But what can I do?'
With that thought, Leonard made his way to work.
