As days were passing, the demonic beasts started becoming more and more ferocious. Roland spent a lot of time on the wall, commanding the recruits. Despite him having no experience in commanding troops, he did a decent job but the hordes of demonic beasts were larger each attack and so a few bisons managed to run into the wall, causing a few cracks along the entire wall. Still, it was damage that could be easily fixed.
Right now, Roland and the recruits just warded off another large horde of demonic beasts and some recruits looked quite worn out despite not complaining.

"What- is that?" The observer muttered loud enough for everyone to hear, looking in front of the wall.
Roland frowned when he saw a large demonic beast walking on 4 legs with a turtle-like shell on its back.
'There are no longer big containers with gunpowder in the field. The ones with metal fragments won't kill it and it feels like a waste to use them on 1 demonic beast. Still, this must be the largest one I have ever seen.'
"Look! There is another horde right behind that large beast!" Someone shouted, pointing their finger at the horde in the back.
'We have to kill it before it gets to the wall, its shell would most likely be capable of making a hole in the wall. The angle is also bad, we can at most shoot its legs, therefore it's either shell or legs.'
"Your Highness?" Van'er called out to Roland who looked absorbed in his thoughts while the large beast was approaching.
"Tch, bring the mini ballista here!" Roland said and others nodded their heads before quickly running off.
'I will either focus on that large beast or on that large horde keeping its distance behind the beast. How are they so smart? Or is this just a coincidence of some sort? Perhaps they just fear that beast and wait for it to die but even I don't want to believe it.' Roland thought while taking aim with the musket. The beast was still quite far away but it was within the range of musket's maximum firing range.
*Boom* Roland shot its shell and as he expected, the bullet got reflected, probably even if fired at the point-blank range wouldn't make difference. He quickly reloaded the gun and tried shooting one of its legs.
*Boom* This time bullet wasn't reflected but Roland couldn't see much blood and it seemed like the beast increased its speed instead of slowing down even only by a bit.
'I can't shoot its head under this angle, I would have to jump down from the wall.' Roland thought, taking a look behind him to see the recruits moving the ballista very slowly. He quickly estimated that he would only have 1 shot before the beast would get to the wall.
"Change of plans, the section under my command get down from the wall, stop moving that ballista any further, and remain where you currently are. Bring more containers with gunpowder and place them at the places where I will get rid of snow. The hunters with muskets from other sections join us down behind the wall, leaving only 1 hunter with a musket in each section! Move quickly!" Roland commanded and quickly got down from the wall and other recruits followed after him despite being confused.
"Your Highness, what are you planning?!" Carter shouted from the other section, seeing how Roland abandoned his section where also the large beast was moving to.
"We will let them make a hole in the wall. This way, we will have to protect only 1 place on the entire wall but remain where you are and tell us if the beast is still moving in the same direction. Also, warn us once it will get close enough!" Roland shouted, shocking everyone.
"A-Alright! The beast didn't change its direction even after all of you have left!" Carter informed everyone, he knew that now isn't the time to argue and since Roland's plans till today worked every time, he decided to put his trust in him.
"Put the containers here, here....and there, quickly!" Roland was quickly preparing for the warm welcome of "ram's" arrival.
'I just hope that creature will want to continue moving forward instead of clearing the path for wolves.'
"The musket users in front, once you shoot, move behind the spear users and reload your gun. Don't shoot its legs or shell, and don't shoot until I command! Roland formed a line in front of the ballista which was aiming towards the wall.
"Brace for the impact, it's almost here!" Iron Axe shouted for the other recruits still on the wall.
*bang* As expected, the creature almost as big as the wall broke through the wall and made a large hole inside it. The creature was visibly dazed from the impact.
'Good, none of the boxes were damaged!'
"Those on my left take aim at its head, those on my right take aim at those containers filled with gunpowder. Aim the ballista at its head." Roland said.
The creature finally got up and took a few slow steps forward, being surrounded by the boxes with gunpowder.
"Now, shoot!" Roland shouted and swung his arm down.
*Boom* *Boom!*.... The loud sounds continued and the entire creature was now covered in the smoke.
When the smoke cleared up, the charred creature was revealed with its head pierced by the bolt from the ballista, lying on the ground completely lifeless.
"Wolves!" Carter shouted and both he and Iron Axe started making their way down to help Roland after seeing that the wolves were going for the most simple way inside.
'I have only 7 musket users here and a few spearmen, they had almost zero combat training since I didn't expect such a strange creature. Hell, I even expected a dragon, that's why the ballista but this house-sized walking turtle? What the hell is it?'
"They are coming!"
*Boom* *Boom*... Those who already reloaded their guns shot the wolves jumping over the dead creature's body. However since they are not coordinated, a few shot the same target, killing all 3 wolves but...
"More are coming!" The recruit who remained on the wall shouted for the others.
'Tch, I should have taught them a bit more details, they fired 7 times for only 3 targets. They won't reload in time and the spearmen will have to engage with the wolves. We can win this but there will certainly be sacrifices this way! It's already too late to call Anna to buy us some time...' Roland thought, it almost seemed as if the time slowed down how hard he was thinking of solutions to his problem. He couldn't use the boxes with gunpowder and metal fragments so close to them and he only had a few small hand grenades that wouldn't make much damage plus he only had 1 shot to make it explode before he would have to reload again and he had no time for that.
As Roland was thinking of a solution that would make the least sacrifices, fully accepting that there is no other option without any sacrifices...
The first demonic wolf jumped over the creature, running towards Roland's group. However, it didn't travel for even 5 meters before its entire body was enveloped by the flames.
"?! Anna?!" Roland looked behind him with a surprised expression.
"I apologize Your Highness but I no longer wish to just hide while you risk your life out here." Anna said with a determined expression and all the recruits around Roland had their eyes on her figure, just witnessing that she is a real witch.
"Y-Your Highness, why would you hide someone who could help us against those beasts?!" Instead of being filled with fear, the recruits complained under their breath with relieved expressions, especially the spearmen who were about to engage the wolf.
Thanks to the injured recruits over the past few days, the rumors of a little angel named Nana who could make all the pain go away spread among the recruits. At first most of them laughed it off but as more injured people started returning with the same words, everyone got so curious about it that they wanted to meet her in the face. The recruits were told by Roland that he hired a witch to help them with surviving the months of the demons but that information didn't change their curiosity to meet her therefore now, seeing Anna controlling flames didn't shock them much.
"Don't worry Anna, the scolding comes after we defeat the horde. Please help us delay them after every time we shoot." Roland said in a joking manner with a grateful smile before focusing on the hole inside the wall.
"Nightingale" Roland muttered in low voice, hoping for her to be around.
"*Yes? What do you require, Your Highness.*" He immediately heard a seductive whisper right next to his right ear.
"*Please protect Anna.*" He whispered back before commanding the musket users to shoot the new wolves.
"*What about you, I can't protect both of you at the same time.*"
"*I had no idea you were protecting me. Don't worry about me, I can take care of myself plus Carter and Iron Axe will be here soon, focus on Anna please.*" Roland replied firmly.
"*Anna will be safe*" She whispered to Roland and most likely left his side.
