Forgotten

I was a popular goddess once and it was a beautiful sight to open my senses to every waking day to watch people throng to my temple to make daily requests and offerings to me and I, granting their prayers because I love them or because I feared withering away from existence so much that I granted all requests no matter how bad they were.

I threw my rational thinking to the side when it came to helping them and I grew in might and respect, overtaking other gods as I outlived them as they were forgotten and began to wither away from existence. It was the fear of death that motivated me to work harder, I granted extra requests and threw in a few blessings they didn't ask for. It was extra weight for me but I didn't mind as long as I didn't wither. Besides, who didn't like being everyone's go-to god?

For a time I couldn't imagine what life would be like without them and then I started to get tired, not weak just tired and angry. I saw how greedy they have become, aggressively sacrifice their own to get my attention. The other gods laughed at me and called me names as we watched the chaos unfold on Earth.

Humans fought themselves for my favour, killed each other in my name, enslaved themselves because apparently and unknown to me, I was revered as the god of chaos, war and death.

That wasn't what I wanted. I wanted to bring love, happiness, prosperity and all the good things to humans. I blinded myself to the nature of their requests telling myself it was for their good.

I retaliated by striking down any human who prayed I kill for them, I wiped out their entire families too and soon, they turned their backs on me. No one came to my temple to burn incense, I had no priests to keep me from withering. Everything became awfully quiet for a very long time, too long as I have lost my sense of time.

I am the goddess kaos and I have begun to wither.

"I've got it! I found it! finally!" a very excited man hopped around. He was dressed in Khaki shorts and a dirty white t-shirt.

"Freaking finally!" another woman, who looked much cleaner but slightly covered in dust walked up to him with a pickaxe, ready to dig. "my nose is all clogged up...let's get this entrance opened"

"After years of searching, we found her!"

It was obvious now. I hadn't wasted my life on this project like they thought. I didn't understand why they handed me this project in the first place and as time went on as I worked on it I became obsessed and I realised their intentions was to keep me busy, they didn't have any use for me because of my backgrounds, they felt somewhat intimidated by me.

I readied myself to dig, I was going to break through the entrance and share her secrets to the world, I would show those who didn't believe in my abilities and discarded the project.

I lifted the axe and brought it down with all my might.

The axe bounced of the rocks as it hit something hard. The vibration threw me backwards into a nearby boulder. Yara came rushing towards me, concern and surprise plastered on her face.

"are you alright? what the hell was that, metal?" she helped me up.

"I think I hit the entrance... we'd have to use our hands to pry it open. I don't want to sully this place by blowing it up, I have got too much respect for it..." I muttered

"your shoulder is busted, Dhara. We'll call the locals and I'm they'd help us" she was concerned. she knew how hard I've worked for it and I wouldn't give up now when I'm this close to uncovering the world most elusive piece of history because of a dislocated shoulder.

"I'll pop it back into place...and you'll help me" I said firmly.

"what? Are you crazy?" She smack my arm and I winced "sorry... fine, bite down on something"

"okay" I scrambled through my bag to find something I could bite down on.

" do you remember that time you'd leave an extra Galaxy Coffee and Scones in the fridge in the common room at the university and it would go missing?"

"yeah? do you know who's been stealing it?" I gritted my teeth in anger, if I ever find that thief, they'd be sorry.

"yeah..." she smiled knowingly and my eyes rounded in shock. it was her! why didn't it come to mind? I was jolted out of my thought when. I heard a loud pop and a searing pain hit me square in the nerves. I let out a chilling girlish scream that left Yara doubling over in laughter at my delayed reaction.

The metal door to the temple creaked open with a loud whine at being disturbed. The two breathe a sigh of relief before stepping into the temple hall and as soon as they did, the torches came alight, illuminating the perfectly preserved Temple of Death.
