Evans pov
I did not understand what was going on suddenly. Both women did not have any interest in me. One of them brought me just to show that she could afford any amount. The other was a peasant who was suffering from dire needs.
"There must be come confusion.'' I wanted to start but they both glared at me and I kept my mouth shut. Would anyone remind both of them that they were talking about me?!
"So, you want to buy him from the gold coins I have offered you to help yourself and others?" asked the duchess in a cold tone. I was afraid that she would punish the woman. I could see her eyes burning with anger.
But the woman was not ready to get down. She nodded her head with full confidence.
"Since you have given me the amount even when i told you that i can misuse it. It is mine now and I can use it any way you want." she replied so nonchalantly that I was even at a loss for words. What was the woman trying to do? She did not look like she would do anything on her whim. She was a wise woman who was helping others in facing this calamity then what happened to her wisdom? And the duchess! He was sure that she would slice the woman to pieces if she flared more.
"Very well! But that was not enough. I brought him ten thousand gold coins. The amount you have is only ten percent of it. How are you going to pay me the rest of the amount?" asked the duchess with a face telling. Do you think you have the capability to stand against me! Ha! Everyone will bow to me. I was the queen! I could even feel her aura that was covering all of us.
The woman's eyes widened as if she had seen the ghost. She was looking lost! "Ten.. ten thousand!!" She was so shocked that her whole body was trembling. Even her voice had turned shaky! And I shook my head. What had she expected from the duchess? Of course, she could pay this much without even blinking her eyes.
She was not like us. I wanted to pull her back so that the matter could be solved but she spoke again and this time I was at a loss of words.
"You bought her 10,000 gold coins so that he can rest and follow you. You did not even treat him like a servant. Let alone be a slave. Who gives the slave all the food because he is hungry and makes sure that he is fine when leaving him. You even asure his well-being like he is a kin!" the lady spoke as if she could not believe it. But her words were enough to shock me. Had the duchess been looking for my well being and assuring my safety?
I looked at the duchess with wide eyes. Thousands and millions of questions filled my mind. I held my breath unconsciously as I looked at her. Trying my best to not show my anxiety.
She snorted as she looked at the woman as if she was a crazy one.
"What kind of nonsense you are sprouting. I paid so much for him because I wanted to show that I would never lose an auction. And i gave him all food because i was not hungry and when have i even looked after him? I want him to follow me to fill my pride and I did not need to torment my servants. I like to physically torment them when they make mistakes and so far he is obedient enough to not disturb me much." she replied in a strong voice and I nodded. I let the breath out.
How could I even believe the words of the woman? How could I expect that a woman like the duchess would care about me? I was nothing but a slave that should not be even counted as human. I shook my head at the absurdity of that thought. But the woman was not ready to give up. She smiled and opened her mouth again.
"If that is the case, then you would not mind if he would be injured or hit?" I took a step back when I heard her. Has she gone crazy now! What was she even saying? Just to prove her point that the duchess cared about me. Was she ready to go to any length even if it needed to hurt me? This was utter craziness!
But before I could run away or do anything, I heard the Duchess cycling but in the next second, her sword was on the neck of the woman. My eyes widened when I felt the tension between them.
The chuckling face of the duchess had turned icy cold and poison was dripping from her voice;
"How dare you? Do you think you can threaten me by damaging my property or talking in front of me? Have you taken my authority so lightly, lady. That you even have the courage to speak like that in front of me?" but the woman was still standing there calmly.
"It is not about his life but about challenging my authority to even think about damaging things that belong to me. It is your first mistake. So I am letting it go. But next time, I would not give a threat or wait by just showing my sword." she warned as she took back the sword and put it back in her scabbard.
The woman finally nodded and bowed her head. I took a breath of relief as I was worried that they would indulge in a flight.
"We are leaving. You can still write to me if you suffer any grievances in future. Come Evan!" I nodded as she finally looked at me with her authoritative aura.
The woman also nodded but stayed silent until the duchess took a few steps further when she whispered to me.
"See, I have told you."
