What would your mother say?

Breakfast was almost over when Evander reached the dining hall, he had fell and hit his face so many times that no experience can help prevent him from getting a small cut on his lip, bruises on his legs, and a nosebleed. He should've accepted the help of the other kids, but he has yet shed his pride. Evan smelled the surroundings, the scent of warm vegetable stew and some bread, he also hears the sound of people both young and old eating and the clamor of wooden utensils and bowls on the table. He slowly walked towards the tables to find a space to eat.

Beno watched Evan as he shuffles his feet towards what he believe is an empty seat, only ending up holding the heads, shoulder, and backs of the other orphans, who were equally disturbed with Evan's actions but couldn't say anything about it. Beno finds it amusing and funny so he yells at him,

"Follow my voice Evans! You can sit with us!"

"Shut up! I'll find my own!...oh sorry was that your armpit." Evan shouts back between apologies to the people he accidentally touches.

"Your share is near me you know and it's getting cold!" Beno replies, but Evan cannot be persuaded against his own stubbornness, while Beno never stopped annoying Evan.

"You're going the wrong direction! Hey get back here! Are you deaf?!" Beno continually yells at Evan, who purposely shuffles away from Beno's voice, but he can't go against his hungry stomach so in the end he still went towards Beno's table.

"What the hell's wrong with you, you're being annoying already, just get some help from the other kids like what Sister Fatima said." Beno tells Evan, as the blind boy started eating his breakfast.

"Shut up I'm eating, it's bad manners to talk while eating." Evan replies as he scarf down hungrily his bowl of vegetable stew and bread, taking out the manners which he is talking about. He arrived at the orphanage for about a month now, he stayed in bed for two weeks, while the other weeks he used trying to find his way around the orphanage. This boy, Beno, is one of the kids asked by Father Luis to look after him.

"You can't eat manners. Food is food, if you aren't in this orphanage you would've died already like a blind beggar on the streets." Beno continues the conversation, while Evan stopped eating, he loudly puts down his bowl and faced Beno's location. The other children nearby stared at them not making a sound.

"Did you just call me a blind beggar?!" Evan asked with contempt clearly present in his voice.

"No I did not, what are you deaf? I said If you aren't in this orphanage, if Father Luis didn't bring you here, you would've died like a blind beggar on the streets." Beno explains putting emphasis on the word "died".

"Just to be clear with you, not only you, but to all of you! I can kill you all with a f*cking spatula so you better watch your mou-" before Evan can finish his sentence a wooden spatula hit his head.

"What's this I'm hearing, about killing and F*ck- I mean making babies? Is that you again Ronan?!" Sister Abigail an old nun of the convent shouts at the orphans, she was the one who hit Evander in the head with a wooden spatula. The whole dining hall became quiet.

"That wasn't me Mama Aby! I haven't even experienced f*ck- I mean making babies, I'm as virgin as everybody in here!" Ronan, one of the teenagers in the orphanage replies to Sister Abigail, his close friends laughed. Then he looked at Beno and Evan's table.

"Who the hell hit me with a spatula?!" Evan yells, then Sister Abigail walked towards Evander then pinched his ear dragging him out of the dining hall.

"Oh so it wasn't Ronan but you young Evans. What's this about hell this is an orphanage under the protection of God I don't want to hear any words about making babies or taking a person's life out of you mouth." Sister Abigail scolds the young boy as they walked out into the hallway.

"Ow, ow, ow! What's with you nuns and pinching ears!" Evan yells but he doesn't fight back.

"You don't scold a child in front of his friends." Sister Aby speaks still holding Evan's ear.

"I would like to disagree to that they're not my friends." the boy replies

"Then they're your new family. As Family we have to stick together and treat each other right. As long as you are here you will have to follow this family rule. I want to see you doing better so no more of this stubbornness and bad child attitude, remember that you are not the only orphan in this house, that each children here also have a story that might even be more painful than yours." Sister Abigail explains as she removes her hand from Evan's ear. Evan could only shut his own mouth and listen, he could feel the nun's anger and gaze that was directed at him.

"It's been a month, your eyes have healed. So what's with this fight with Beno?" the old nun asks Evander.

"A misunderstanding. I though he called me a blind beggar. I may be blind, but I'm not a beggar." the boy explains himself.

"Yes you are not a beggar. Then what do you call a person who tells others he'll take away their lives? Aren't they worse than beggars?" Evan couldn't refute the old nun.

"Right. Now let's go back inside so you can finish your breakfast." The old nun holds Evan's hand and leads him back to his table.

"Yes Sister Abigail." Evan replies.

"Call me Mama Aby!" the old nun answers back with a smile.

The noise of the dining hall slowly returned after Evander sat back to his chair.

"Sorry man." Beno tells him.

"No worries. Now let me just eat in peace...Please." Evan answers back as he chew his share of bread after dipping it on the vegetable stew.

"You should get a haircut, you're becoming a blind beauty." Beno banters.

"...Can you please just let me finish my breakfast first."

"Okay, okay...But really you should tie your hair, if it becomes windy it might whip around and prick the eyes of those near you making them blind." Beno continues, finding joy teasing Evander.

"Well, screw it." Evan responds before throwing a punch towards Beno's face. A brawl breaks out. The noise in the dining hall becomes louder and louder, with the older orphans chanting "fight! fight! fight!" while the younger ones were running around screaming and crying. Sister Abigail and Sister Fatima takes the younger children out of the dining hall.

"Should we stop them?" asks Sister Fatima.

"Let them be. But no lunch for them and especially for those who were chanting!" Sister Abigail replies making her voice loud, enough for the older orphans to hear.

"Hey, hey, hey! stop! stop! James hold Beno! Paul hold the blind one!" Ronan who seems to be the leader of the older kids orders his friends.

"I'm gonna rip out that grandpa hair of yours then maybe you'll finally go bald!" Beno yells as while grabbing a fist full of Evan's hair which he was able to pull out.

"I may be blind but I can find you from a mile a way! You stink like sh*t! Who the hell is touching me?!" Evan answers back. Paul is a large kid so he could easily raise Evander above his own head.

"Put me down! Put me down!" the blind kid shouts adding some creative profanities.

"Okay, Okay, calm down Evans. If you don't calm down we won't get any lunch you hear that. Lunch, food, um um yummy."

"Don't treat me like a kid!"

"Well you're being a kid. So stop it"

"AAARGH!" Evander screams then bites Paul's hand, who immediately let goes of him. Evan falls on the floor, the older kids surrounds him.

"Is he dead?" Paul asks.

"Who are you calling dead!" Evander blurts out, then became quiet.

"I think I broke a rib...Ow", before he lost his consciousness he hears Ronan tell the other kids to call for Father Luis, he also hears Beno tell him that he'll be alright. Then the world became silent.
