Chapter Forty

September 25, 1835

Caroline was not to be let out of her chamber. Iris brought her dinner that night, but other than that no one had come inside the room.

The following morning she lay in bed for hours staring at the ceiling, thinking of a plan to escape this nightmare. The door opens, interrupting her thoughts.

Iris walks in with an elderly man, who appears to be a doctor. Caroline shoots up. “Help me please!” She yells. “He’s a vampire, you have too-” The man interrupts her. “My God it's worse than I had anticipated. She’s hysterical. Hold her down.”

Iris walks over to her. “No!” Caroline yells out, but Iris holds her down.

The doctor checks Caroline out, and quickly comes to a conclusion. “The hysteria should die down, it's normal in pregnancy.”
