MEMORY: Before the Dance (Part 1)

“One, two, three. One, two, three,” our music teacher, Mrs. Fontanilla chanted with a rhythmic sway for the last half an hour. It was the second week of January and the practice for the prom dance had already begun. I was already getting dizzy from all the twirling and turning but I reminded myself I had to get through this as part of the final exams in Music and P.E.

“Look into your partner’s eyes as if you were in love,” she bellowed with a dramatic gusto that echoed throughout the gym.

Far from it, I heard myself thinking and shot a quick look at Boris, a soft-spoken Physics genius who kept looking at his feet, making sure he was moving the right one in the right direction. I think the lack of eye contact was better as I could focus on memorizing the steps rather than pretending I was in love with a classmate I got paired with because of height compatibility.
