Worth some extra shillings

I galloped through the jumble-gut lane. Chestnut neighed as he felt my anger and anxiety. But I had every reason to feel this way. I have seen a fair share of arrogant and psycho men but God, Dominic was a different breed altogether.

I just couldn't seem to forget the interaction I had with him a while ago. The need to choke him to death was growing stronger and stronger as I thought back to it.

My face turned redder than a tomato as I realized my foolishness. Oh, how I should have learned the meaning of that word. Regretting my decision to leave that man alive, I looked up at Dominic.

He had composed himself and was giving his signature content smile like a psychopath. I stepped back knowingly. My legendary approach has been a complete failure. Not to mention how I managed to make a complete fool of myself.

" Well, I am sure you wouldn't pull something like this again, but if you do. Kindly make sure you are not smelling like dead rats and sweat, " he said and smiled.

My mouth dropped open as I tried to process his words. He was enjoying this way too much to lose any opportunity to embarrass me.

Unfortunately, my antics did not leave me much choice than to keep my mouth shut. I pulled my lower lip out and looked at him through my lashes. He arched his eyebrow and then grinned widely.

" Now that I think of it, you do look magnificent ... " my eyes widened, " For someone who is about to get arrested. "

My shoulders sagged in disappointment after hearing his complete sentence. He sure was one heartless man. But I had to convince him somehow.

" Prince Dominic, I am not behind the King's disappearance -

" I know. "

" - and I willingly want to accompany you to search for him - wait what? "

I must have misheard him, did he really said he knows? HE KNOWS!?

I looked up into his eyes with utter shock.

" You are to be arrested for the attempted murder of The Viceroy."

He came closer his smile barely visible, " Why would I want a deceiving and selfish murderer to accompany me? Speaking of which I must say you are the worst assassin I ever had the pleasure to witness. You make me believe that women are indeed only good at household work. Though I am sure you don't even have a flair for that. "

He took a step back and turned towards the woods with his content smile intact.

My mouth opened and closed as my eyes became blurry. I won't lie to you all and say that I never cry, but I didn't want to cry in front of this chauvinist bastard. I hold my breath trying to control any sob that was daring to ruin my composture.

There was no point in staying here any longer. He has no intention of even trying to listen to me.

I huffed, and took a few steps back, testing the waters.

Will he try to stop me if I run but how? He can't show his true identity.

And then I ran. Ran away from him, towards my chestnut. I hope he doesn't think of me as a failure.

I came to a stop in front of a tavern. Unfortunately, it was one of those places that were visited by the upper-class society. I wasn't planning to stay here since the amount of money they will charge will cost me enough to change my occupation from assassin to beggar.

I left chestnut at the stable, which was complimentary of the tavern, with some hay and water. This was more or less to compensate for the extortionate prices.

Nevertheless, my work here is to find some opportunities. These rich monkeys always have some underlying enmity going on. I always find something useful here, and so spending some extra shillings are worth it.

The street was bustling with life even in the early morning hours. Even with their busy schedules, some had time to give me looks for my glorious appearance.

The tavern was much quieter than it would be at night. Before I could enter I bumped into a stick figure. Looking down I saw a young girl on the ground, rubbing her forehead. She looked like she hadn't eaten in weeks, still, her clothes looked fine and somewhat expensive.

She stood up, a cheerful smile on her face as if she didn't saw me but her prince charming. She gave me a quick look over, her smile not waving for even a moment.

" Hello, I am sorry I didn't watch my steps. You look tired and dirty, " she cheered.

I didn't really think she meant it as a compliment and it made me think if everyone was going haywire. Nevertheless, she didn't wait for my reply and continued.

" This kingdom is so nice, the lady in limestone avenue gave me food, shelter and clothes, all for free, after knowing I was in trouble. She even provided me with some money to enjoy some delicacies of this famous tavern, " she kept both of her hands on her chest as she gushed about someone really 'nice'.

" You should come too, " she said as she looked me over again, " the lady is nice to all the helpless girls. She will help you too. "

My smile twitched as the need to strangle her grew stronger.

Helpless. I look helpless...

" That's.. That's so nice of her indeed. Who is this extremely rich, oh I mean generous lady that you are talking about endlessly? "

She didn't seem to notice my sarcasm as she went on cheerfully. She held my hand in hers.

" She is the owner of the biggest building on limestone avenue. Oh! I completely forgot I am in a hurry. Meet you there. "

And she went down the street without waiting for my reply again. She did extremely happy but still, I couldn't process someone being so generous for helpless girls. Not to mention limestone avenue rings some bells in my head.

I decided to visit the place since I was not in the best of financial conditions myself.

I untied chestnut and led him out of the stable. The moment I was about to straddle him, I fell.

Limestone Avenue.

The street, famous for..

.. Prostitution.
