Chapter Eight

Amaris sprinted down the stairs as fast as she could. She’d overslept again. The boys had, for whatever reason, decided not to wake her that morning. Amaris picked up the only piece of bread that was left, and searched for any remainder of jam. She found none. It seemed that Sly had gotten his appetite back. She settled for buttering it and pouring half a cup of milk.

As she turned to leave, she glimpsed a small figure hesitantly standing at the door. “Mizuko,” she smiled welcomingly. “I just came down for something to eat, did you sleep well?”

“yes,” she said stepping fully into the galley. “but I got lost this morning, looking for this place.”
