Chapter 14

“I don’t understand why we have to go if they are the ones getting married?” Alex groaned in annoyance while driving.

“Because they asked us; you being their family and me being their friend, we have to.” Marissa rolled her eyes.

“Well, there is no book which states these kinds of rules.”

“Actually, there is, and you have to follow it. Don’t be so grumpy. We get to have the taste of so many cakes.” She chirps excitedly.

“Still, it is their wedding, so they should be the ones to go cake tasting. And not to forget that you are still healing. Your leg is not perfectly fine yet.”

“Alex, I really didn’t think you were this annoying. Pull up your pants, bring a smile to your face and drive fast. And I cannot stay in my bed forever, and

my leg is just fine. A little pain is not going to kill me.” Marissa glared at him.

Alex didn’t argue further and drove faster. As soon as they reached their destination, he immediately ran towards Marissa to open the door. He extended

his arms and held her waist while entering the cake shop.

“You have got to be kidding me. I can walk just fine. You don’t need to hold me.”

“You are still not walking properly. The less burden you put on your ankle, the faster it is going to heal.” Alex explained.

“Whatever, doc. Let’s have some cakes now.”

During the entire time, Alex was discreetly glancing at Marissa now and then. She looked so content while tasting cakes.

“So, which one do you like?” The manager of the shop asked them.

“Red velvet and dark chocolate. That’s my favorite. What about you?” Marissa asked Alex in return.

“Anything is fine. Whichever you liked the best.” He told her.

“Well, we both came here for the tasting, so even your opinion counts, and we need to select one.” Marissa turned towards Alex.

“Yes, but select whichever you like. I don’t mind anything.”

“Excuse me, can you give us a few minutes to decide on one?” Marissa told the manager and pulled Alex aside to the corner.

“Choose one,” Marissa commanded while folding her hands.

“You are so stubborn. We shouldn’t be selecting the cake. It should be Jenny and Ronny and not us; it is their wedding, not ours.” He folded his hand-

copying her. Within just a few seconds, he realized what he said, and before he could even feel guilty and apologize to her, she burst on him.

“Jesus Christ! You are still on about that. Jenny sent us because she was confused about which cake to order, and Ronny was no help.” Marissa confessed.

“You have got to be kidding me. So, if both of them had already selected two cakes, why did we taste so many of them?” Alex asked her, which made

Marissa a bit uncomfortable as she was now fidgeting with her fingers and looking down at the slippers she was wearing.

“Well, you see, because it’s difficult to say no to free cakes, plus she asked me if there was any other cake better than these two; we could even select

that.” She poked her tongue out, which made Alex chuckle.

“You girls are so difficult to understand.” He started shaking his head sideways.

“We are not that difficult. So now, please tell me which cake we should select.”

“I have to be biased here. No cake can compete with chocolate cake.” Alex told her with a smile.

“Well, then chocolate cake it is.” Marissa grabbed Alex’s hand and dragged him towards the counter. Alex was looking at her with so much gentleness

that it was hard to explain.

“You two make a very adorable couple. I don’t say this to many of them, but I can say for sure that you guys will have a successful married life.” The

manager told them, which made both Alex and Marissa blush.

“We are not a couple. Alex is the bride’s brother, and I am their best friend.” Marissa cleared the misunderstanding.

“Then I am really sorry. The way you both behave and look at each other tells otherwise.”

After that, both of them left nervously from there. Marissa was feeling awkward during the whole situation because of the history those two had, and

whereas Alex was concerned, he was thinking hard. He was still unsure about his feelings for her, but it was getting stronger with every moment.

When both of them reached their building, Alex dropped Marissa off at her apartment as she was still healing.

“Alex, I am not handicapped,” Marissa said when Alex opened the door of her apartment.

“I know that, but...” But Marissa wouldn’t let him finish.

“You know what, let it be. It’s no use arguing with you.” When both of them entered, they found their entire group sitting on the couch in Marissa’s

apartment.

“Guys, how did you enter her house?” Alex asked them, surprised.

“Marissa gave me her spare key for an emergency,” Jenny told him.

“So, you have a habit of crashing people’s places without their prior permission?” Alex raised his eyebrows.

“She is my best friend, and, unlike you, I came here not to treat her as a prisoner but to make her feel free. So, Marissa, get ready. We are going to a club.

And Alex, you are more than welcome to join, but if you are going to be a crybaby the whole time, then go home and sleep.” Jenny smirked.

“You want to take her to the club when she cannot walk properly, let alone dance,” Alex said to Jenny, concern clearly written over his face.

Before Marissa could input her view, Linda intervened.

“Alex, Marissa is just fine. And we are all there, and knowing you, you will make sure she is fine, so can we cut short the argument and leave soon.” She

told her younger brother.

“Alex, please, I can’t believe I actually have to convince you to go anywhere. I am not a kid. I am going, whether or not you like it. You can sulk all you

want.” Marissa left the room to get ready, followed by Jenny and Linda.

“Are you sure that you guys are divorced? Because from what I saw in front of me seemed like a married couple fighting.” John told his brother-in-law.

“I really shouldn’t have divorced her,” Alex stated.

“Well, you can still make things right. You have my permission. But this time, you have to be hundred percent sure before deciding, and you have to do a

lot of work to get Marissa to accept you because she might have accepted you as a friend, but to be more, you have to win her trust.” Ronny told him.

“I cannot blame her for that. But this time, I am going to have her back.” Alex told them.

After a few minutes, Alex was awestruck when Marissa came dressed up for the club. She wore a simple blue top and black jeans and paired them with

shoes. She ties her hair in a ponytail.

“Let’s go, guys.” Jenny did a fist pump.

Both couples were dancing while Alex and Marissa were sitting near the bar, sipping beer.

“May I have a dance?” Some random dude asked Marissa.

Before Marissa could reply, Alex blows him off.

“You are so uptight. If it weren’t for my ankle, I would have been dancing there.” Marissa told him glumly.

It was no surprise that Marissa wanted to dance, as she herself was an excellent dancer, and he didn’t want her to be in a glum mood, so he offered her his

hand.

“May I have this dance, ma’am?” He asked her, which made Marissa surprised.

“Oh, my-my! You actually want me to pressurize my ankle and dance with you. Are you alright?” She asked with a smile.

“Well, being a dancer, you should know that you can still dance and not hurt a sprained leg.” Alex’s statement made Marissa frown in confusion, but she

still followed him to the dance floor.

A slow song was playing. So, Alex guided Marissa and asked her to step on both his feet. At first, she was hesitant, but nonetheless did what he asked her

to do.

She was too close to him and, surprisingly, felt comfortable in his arms. Both of them were slow dancing. Marissa had her hands around his neck and

placed her head on his chest.

Alex was ecstatic. He had never felt this peace in his life. Both of them were enjoying the moment. While Alex was embracing every moment with her,

Marissa was trying to ignore the feelings building up for him.

Both their friends had a big smile on their faces when they saw Alex and Marissa together. Nothing could have made them happier because they knew

that both of them belonged to each other. But they also knew that there was a big chance that Alex might get his heartbroken, but knowing Alex, he

wouldn’t let Marissa go. He will live his life alone but never let Marissa leave him. He will forever protect her.

All four of them had their fingers crossed for Alex and Marissa’s bright future together.
