Almost after 4 hours of running, Sam saw the gates of the outer city. It was almost morning when he reached there.
The outer city gate was dilapidated. A team of earth superpower users were doing some temporary maintenance work before the construction workers could come to fix it.
Sam felt nostalgic seeing this scene...
Sam took a deep breath at the scene. He took a steady pace towards the city gate.
"Halt! Show your identification." demanded the entry point officer.
Sam nodded and showed the document given by the military along with his school ID card. After the military officer verified them, Sam was finally allowed to enter the city.
The city inside now was under construction and maintenance. Sam could see the elderly and middle-aged people who were abandoned sitting on the side of roads, in rags and injuries, eating the food distributed by the military.
Many doctors were tending to the heavily injured ones. They also had a deep look of exhaustion on their face.
Some people were holding their loved ones and crying madly. The whole city was plunged into depression and sadness.
The military was removing the corpses. They were also enriched with sorrow by the death of their comrades and citizens. Still, they had to brace their hearts and carry out their duty.
The city which was so beautiful and lively some days back... but now it looked so worn out and devastated!
Even Sam was affected by the deep sadness. His happy mood due to the survival was gone now!
The conditions of the affected citizens crying for their late loved ones made him remember about his family.
Oh how much he loved them!
He was wandering around in the city when a soldier called him for some questionnaires. He was directly invited to the military base.
"Mr Richards, don't be nervous. We saw you coming out of the jungle, so we are here to ask you about the condition of the jungle at present. Nothing more. Please have a seat." said an officer politely.
"Sure" replied Sam.
"So Mr Richards, judging by your power level, I assume that you were in the outer part of the jungle. Am I right?" asked the officer.
Sam nodded.
"So before coming out of the jungle, did you come across any more gathering of beasts in the last 12 hours?" questioned another officer.
"No. But I heard powerful and engaged roars of high-level beasts when I was exiting the jungle. The atmosphere in the jungle was too tense and I was busy fleeing to save my life. Oh, I also encountered a three-eyed owl yesterday! Probably the high-level beasts will attack the city soon after. I will suggest you prepare to at least defend level 7 or level 8 beasts. The last beast I encountered was a peak level 5." informed Sam seriously.
The questioning officers were shocked at the grave information that Sam gave!
"So did you notice any other anomaly?" inquired the officer anxiously.
Sam shook his head. Although he knew that the beast tide was man-made but he didn't have evidence to prove it. Telling unnecessary things would complicate the matter and alert his enemies.
Right now he couldn't even trust the military about his life. Probably he was just being paranoid but after experiencing the life-death situation the past few days, he had become suspicious and was having severe trust issues.
He rather would not trust anyone other than people he knew well than to trust a stranger and face death!
After some more questioning, Sam was free. He stood outside of the military office and contemplated his next course of action.
He now had three choices —
One was to return home and forget everything. The second was to stay here and search for his enemies. The third was to lay low and let the enemies knock on his door themselves.
The first choice was definitely out of options since the feeling of death he felt the last few days would never be forgotten. He would have his revenge!
About the second one, he didn't have the clue where to start the search. Finding them would be like searching a needle in a haystack as his enemies wouldn't be stupid to print ' I AM YOUR ENEMY' on their faces! They certainly would lay low!
The third option was the best choice for him! His enemies would never let him go. Sooner or later they would get the information about his survival and attack him again and that time it would be Sam's chance to give them a surprise.
After all, nobody would believe that he went from level 0 to level 3 in a week or rather in 3 days! All he needed was to lay low and hatch a plan to catch them all together.
Anyway, the time of the system mission is unlimited, so he was not in a hurry...
...
Main military base...
The Captain stood in front of his lieutenants as another military officer informed them of the casualty report and other destructions.
It was 12 hours since the beast tide receded!
"Sir, at the present casualty of soldiers are twenty thousand while the deaths of citizens are only two thousand. "
The Captain and lieutenants were shocked and amazed at the result. They never expected so low a casualty rate! They looked at each other's eyes and they felt each other's joy!
A beast tide of more than fifty thousand monsters would cause more than a hundred thousand deaths of soldiers and kill almost all the abandoned citizens.
More than forty thousand people were abandoned in the outer city. So compared to the devastations before, the present casualty rate was absolutely nothing!
Of course, they felt grief for the dead soldiers and citizens but there was nothing they could do! The fewer humans died, the better!
"Good! Good! Good!!" exclaimed the Captain. It was clear that he was in a good mood.
"Continue!"
Next, the officer gave the detailed report of devastation the beast tide cost and the necessary costs needed for the maintenance and recovery.
Knock! Knock!
"May I come in Captain?"
The Captain raised his brows in displeasure, "Sure!"
He would like to see who was disturbing his important meeting.
It was the officer who questioned Sam. He was nervous to disturb the meeting but Sam's news was too important to be neglected!
The officer then reported everything Sam informed, in detail and the whole crowd was left in shock!
