chapter 9

First Lieutenant Daniel Garret, callsign "Reaper" ran through the corridor of the battleship, the USSS Miljorn. Mere minutes ago, a general alarm had sounded. An entire ROM navy battlegroup and titan class ship entered the Laplace system, and was making a beeline for the UEN Colonial Navy fleet in orbit of Trade 301, and all fighter and Javelin mech pilots were given the order to scramble.

Daniel made a sharp turn down the corridor toward the mech hangar, running through the doorway to see his javelin already prepped per his specs and on the catapult ready to go, with a dozen other pilots and mechs darting around the hangar. Javelin mechs were designed not only for terrestrial warfare, but also to serve as space combat capable vehicles. The changes Daniel has made to it compared to the loadout he uses on the ground is swapping the plasma rifle for a typical shell firing weapon, an auto cannon firing 120mm rounds and releasing the limiters on the mech. The change was necessary, since the plasma rifle pulled power directly from the javelins mini fusion reactor, which in space could negatively affect the thruster power and limiters.

He quickly climbed the ladder to the scaffolding beside his mech. He ran the short distance to the open cockpit, quickly climbing in. He grabs the helmet from the seat, putting it on and activating the hermetic seal, ensuring he'll be protected in the event of a hull breach. He flips a switch, closing the cockpit as he turns on his radio.

"Flight control, Reaper here. I'm cocked and locked, ready to rock, over. Waiting for acknowledgment."

An answer comes through. "Copy Reaper. You're launching with Breaker squadron, designation Breaker 5. Objectives are to intercept hostile fighters and perform harassing actions against enemy war ships. Clear?"

Daniel pushes the button initiating the reactor, the deep hum of power rushing through his mech fills his ears as the mono-eye sensor on the head of the javelin turns on.

"Copy flight control. Launching with Breaker, take down enemy fighters and annoy bad guy boats. Good to go flight control."

The massive hangar doors open. Javelins are propelled forward by the catapults until they're launched out of the ship, the thrusters on their feet and backpacks switching on as they fly. Daniel slams back into his seat as his mech is launched forward and finally out of the ship, the thrusters switching on as he boosts alongside Breaker squadron, moving into formation.

His radio crackles to life. "Breaker squadron, Breaker 1 here. Listen boys and girls, I don't want heroics. These Javelins are worth a damn sight more than you are, and I don't wanna hear the brass complain about losing any. Got it brats?" The voice was a woman, sounding to be in her mid 50s.

Daniel sounds off, in unison with the pilots. "Aye aye ma'am!"

"Alright! Now maintain formation, hostile fighters and space combat mechs coming in fast. ETA, 5 minutes." says Breaker 1 over the comm. Daniel magnifies the image from the eye camera, seeing the hostile units in the distance, moving in fast. He'd guess they're about two miles away. Numerous space fighters, but most worryingly are a large number of the new mechs the ROM are fielding. Naval intel calls them Bastion's , on account of them all having a large physical shield on the left arm. Their capabilities however, remain a mystery.

'Guess we'll find out what these xeno loving Earth scum can bring to the table.' thinks Daniel.

He smiles under his flight helmet. He has a feeling he's gonna have a lot of fun today.
