... Is Long Zhao Xue not staying with the Second Madam every night?"
Yu Fen looked around to make sure no one was around when she lowered her voice to a whisper.
"That was what everyone was saying on the surface, but the fact is that General Long has not come to any wife's manor for a while now. No one saw him. As opposed to Second Young Master Long who has been visiting quite often with all the three madams..."
Xiao Yue widened her eyes.
"What? First Madam too????"
"Ssshhh Young Lady not so loud. With the First Madam it is different. They always maintain a respectable distance. Second Young Master Long has been coming often to the First Madam's manor to talk about things. And a few days ago...."
She leaned closer to Xiao Yue.
"...First Madam cried. In front of Second Young Master Long."
An awkward silence fell upon the room. Xiao Yue did not need Yu Fen to remind her how often Long Zhao Feng visited her residence. Her own husband had never even come once, but the brother came so often.
The maids must be gossiping a lot about the relationship between Xiao Yue and Long Zhao Feng. Xiao Yue felt her cheeks burn from embarrassment.
"There is nothing between me and Long Zhao Feng." she emphasized the word 'nothing'.
In the future, she might have to keep a distance from Long Zhao Feng. Exactly what was he planning, being chummy with his brother's wives? A sense of dread filled Xiao Yue's heart. She had just dwelled in the good feeling to have Long Zhao Feng as someone close to being a friend, only to realize that the latter might have a hidden agenda.
Xiao Yue went to sleep with mixed feelings. She was surprised to know that among those feelings, there was a hint of bitter disappointment.
After hearing about Long Zhao Feng from Yu Fen, Xiao Yue became extra cautious of the young man. There was a saying that having common enemies turned strangers into unlikely friends.
Based on what Yu Fen told him, it was clear that Long Zhao Feng was not acting in the interest of his own brother. Then again, if that was true then he was a despicable person. Even if he could be a useful ally, Xiao Yue could not lower herself to that extent.
She was thankful that Long Zhao Feng was there for her during the last two days, but she did not plan to drop her guard in front of him at all! If Long Zhao Feng really was as despicable as everyone thought he was, he could easily turn his back on an ally. It was too risky to trust him.
There was only a silver lining to this knowledge. The second-best martial art master in the Hong Kingdom was not going to stand in her way.
After going through two emotional days, Xiao Yue managed to sleep soundly that night. Ever since she came back alive in Chun Ya's body, she had not had a single dream. That night, she drifted into a dreamscape.
When she opened her eyes, she was standing in a vast field of tall verdant grass. Above her was an endless blue sky with not even the slightest trace of cloud. A gust of wind blew from behind, prompting her to go.
Xiao Yue walked slowly while letting her hands hover over the grass tops. They tickled her hands gently as she moved forward. Where was she? It was not scenery from home. Her homeland was situated in a barren land with a lot of dust and sandstorms. She had never seen such a fertile, beautiful patch of land.
"Xiao Yue."
Xiao Yue whipped around and found that person, who had somehow appeared behind her out of nowhere.
"The Shaman!" she cried.
They met again after so much time had passed. The shaman smiled at her, amongst the tall green grass. She looked exactly the way Xiao Yue remembered her that night in the tent. Dressed in a dark red robe with lots of exotic crystal accessories adorning her neck, waist, and arms. These accessories were said to enhance the shaman's skills greatly and had been passed from generation to generation of shamans.
"How do you like your new body?"
Xiao Yue gaped at her. The Shaman knew that she had been revived??
"A... are you saying that you did this?"
The Shaman nodded and her smile grew wider.
"Of course. This was done as agreed with all the tribe elders."
"But... why? Why me? I mean..."
"Why? Xiao Yue, you were chosen. You were chosen to avenge your tribe."
Xiao Yue's heart started to beat fast. She had planned to do it anyway, but to hear that revenge was truly the reason why she was revived was still surprising.
"I... I want to, but I cannot even get close to Long Zhao Xue. His whereabouts are rarely known, I..."
The Shaman cupped Xiao Yue's hands.
"Xiao Yue, you can do it. Only you can. Think about your parents, your uncles, everyone in your tribe. You have not exerted enough effort."
The Shaman's tone was mellow and kind, but her words were like ice shards piercing Xiao Yue's heart. The woman was right. The Hong Kingdom destroyed her tribe, but what had she done ever since she was revived? She kept saying that she wanted to take revenge, but she had done nothing. All she could do was watch. How pathetic.
The Shaman let go of her hands and straightened her figure.
"If you have made up your mind, I have something that can help you."
