Xiao Yue thanked him and rushed to the fence made of bamboo poles. Indeed, soldiers were placed encircling the first and second layer of the pointy fence, and someone as always sat at the top of the lookout tower to see what was happening as far as eyes could reach. Xiao Yue wondered if the war had already started. All she could do was work on the antidote, waiting and praying for everyone to come back safely.
Synthesizing an antidote from the blood was one thing, testing it was another. They did not have any patients to test it on, so after working hard for three days and three nights, Xiao Yue and the hospital staff surrounded the little vial of antidote and wondered.
"Brother Chen, do you think it will work?" Caretaker Wang elbowed Medic Chen.
"How am I supposed to know? Come, I will rub some toxin on you and then give you the antidote. See if you survive."
Caretaker Wang immediately shuffled away from Medic Chen while giving him an aghast look. He went to elbow Xiao Yue.
"Xiao Ya, we worked so hard. How can we test it?"
Xiao Yue was deep in thought. Half of the troops went away to attack the Hei Kingdom three days ago, but there had been no news from the battlefield. What exactly was happening on the battleground? Xiao Yue was dying to know.
"What if... we go there?"
"Go where?" The others frowned and bent closer to Xiao Yue to hear more clearly.
"To the battlefield, I mean. I want to know how they are doing."
Caretaker Wang burst into laughter. He laughed so hard that he almost rolled on the floor, holding his stomach. Xiao Yue turned slightly pink. Did she just say something that funny??? The others had enough grace not to laugh. Medic Chen merely put an arm over Xiao Yue's shoulder and talked to her like she was a five-year-old boy.
"Xiao Ya ah, I know you are new to the army but aren't you a little too naive? Do you think the battleground is a food stall that you could frequent as many times as you want? You cannot hope to come there to watch the war like you are watching a tournament?"
Medic Chen shook his head. He wanted to say, "If you are not careful, you might end up like poor Zhou Zi Chen" but he did not have the heart to say it out loud. Xiao Yue pursed her lips. It was not like she wanted to watch the war for fun!
"I am just worried. It has been three days and no news. What if... what if all of them...?"
Everyone sucked in their breath. Then one by one they started to scold Xiao Yue, wriggling their fingers at her.
"How can you say that!"
"That is like wishing them bad luck!"
"Don't even think about it!"
"..."
Xiao Yue was not trying to curse the troops who were fighting for their kingdom out there. It's just that she had experienced a total annihilation. In wars, it was possible for one side to lose everyone they had. If that happened, of course no one would come back from the war front. Xiao Yue rubbed her hands anxiously.
'Long Zhao Feng,' she thought. 'Please, come back safely.'
The group of people around Xiao Yue was watching her with much interest. The disguised girl gave off a familiar feeling that they had seen before amongst the military men. They each nodded at each other with full understanding. So that was how it was. No wonder, eh? Yes, truly no wonder.
Among the caretakers, Caretaker Wang was the nosiest one. He patted Xiao Yue's shoulder and sighed as if he could feel the pain in Xiao Yue's heart.
"Xiao Ya ah, now I understand. There is no need to hold back your feelings. If you want to cry, then cry. If you keep everything inside, you will burst from worries."
Xiao Yue stared at the man.
"What are you talking about, Brother Wang?"
Caretaker Wang released her and said with a slightly mocking tone, "Eh, are you still pretending? Xiao Ya, we are not blind. We know you are worried about a man."
Xiao Yue blushed. What the... Was it so obvious? Oh no, had they found out her disguise? Xiao Yue grabbed at her cheeks as if she were wearing a mask that was about to fall down.
"I-I don't know what you are talking about," she said, averting her gaze. She pretended to be busy with the vial of antidote.
The others started to giggle. Oh, Xiao Ya this young man was so adorable! Young people who fell in love for the first time were just like blooming flowers. Shy when opening up, but once they bloomed fully, their beauty was beyond compare.
The others quickly dispersed after they were done with the antidote talk. They all knew what Caretaker Wang was talking about, but they were not interested to poke their nose into Xiao Yue's business. Unfortunately for Xiao Yue, Caretaker Wang was exactly such a nosy person.
"No need to be shy," Caretaker Wang said in a hushed voice as he helped Xiao Yue tidy up around the hospital.
"We all know who it was. Tell me, how long has it been?"
