They had some ideas about who the person was the moment Aslan described the characteristics of that person. So when he pointed his finger at Carla's photo, nobody was surprised, but they looked increasingly troubled by each second. Out of all people, she just had to be the most influential and powerful girl in the school. Even if they wanted to investigate, there was no way to do that without risking her family's wrath.

As unfair as it might be, I was painfully aware of the difference in status between me and Carla. Faced with the strength of the Meyer family, even if Carla strode inside the teacher's office unmasked, these people would still pretend not to know. 

How many of these people were trying to curry favor with Carla? Rather than risking their career by playing detective, it'd be better to seal this matter into a box and bury it deep in the ground.
