He picked through their pockets, but turned up only a few coins, some cigarettes, and paper talismans similar to what the hell knights had carried, save they were meant to get in and out of the castle rather than away from the island.

He brightened briefly when he found a set of talismans there were meant for getting off the island—but they had been marked ahead of time with the blood of the dead hell knights, and the spells had already died. Damn. "Getting into the castle is going to be more difficult than I thought," he said, showing her the talismans and explaining.

"So what are we going to do?" Erzsébet asked.

Håkon narrowed his eyed, pursing his lips. "I'm not sure. Let's continue on, perhaps seeing the castle will provide an idea. Let me take care of this lot first." He briefly considered leaving them alive, but they'd acted like men doing their job willingly, and it was clearly a job they'd done many times before if he could trust the snatches of conversation he'd gotten.
