Chapter 10: System Update

Darkness is all I can see no matter where I turn. Each step sending ripples beneath my feet as if it were water. The silence is both consuming and serene. "Where am I?" I think to myself. I look down as I walk to see that I'm in a silver dress that goes down to my knees with the loose sleaves ending just above my elbows.

I walk for what feels like etnerity and a second all at once. Finally in the distance I see a faint glow. "Hello!" My voice echos endlessly in the darkness. Then after a moment I hear a monsterious screech coming from behind me quickly getting closer.

A chill shoots up my spin as I frantically search for somewhere to hide. When my eyes land on the glow in the distance again, I cant help but think it might be too far but then the screeching sound suddenly sounds close behind me and I find my legs moving as fast as they can towards to light.

I try not to look behind me as I keep my eyes on the light to afraid to look behind me and see what abomination is chasing me. Even when the screeching went silent. I didnt stop, but the silence was so chilling that I couldnt help but look back, only to see a creature that would haunt my dreams for the rest of my life.

At first it was a just a shadow in the dark but as it got closer it apprence became clearer. It has no eyes and seem to crawl on the darkness as if it were as solid as the floor. Its four legs move bizarrely out of sync but somehow it's still chillingly fast with two tenticales, each long enough to wrap around itself twice, on its back like a pair of revolting wings, dripping with some kind of slime.

It has wire like hairs on its head running down its spine to a rat like tail, but what drew my attention the most is its mouth. It's large enough to wallow me whole and has no lips putting it ferocious teeth on display, each the size of daggers. It let out a screech as it got closer and closer to me.

I could see the small razer like teeth that lined the bottom of its month and its whip like tongue seems similar to a frogs as it reachs out for me, except on the underside at the end is a slit mouth lined with teeth, but what scares me most is the fact that I couldn't see the back of its throat, just a fleshy wall its tongue stretches out of which means its larger mouth is only a cage so the smaller mouth on its tongue can slowly eat me alive, one small piece at a time as the teeth on the months floor cut into my flesh.

I can't help but scream as I run for my life. I run as fast as I can but it's still slowly catching up to me. My energy is draining fast when ahead the glow has become clearer, its a door. Don't know if it will save me from the creature hunting me but it's all I have. I force myself to sprint faster then I ever have in my life as I desperately try to reach the door.

Just as its fleshy tongue is about to latch onto my leg the tip of my figures touches the door. I feel a great forse pulling me away and hear the enrage cry of the creatureas it loses its prey.

I feel relief for a moment before I find myself dropped into an empty room. "Where am I?" I break out in cold sweat as I throw my hand over my mouth. I'm shaking as I look around jumping at every corner. When nothing happens I slowly ake my hand away from my mouth and breath heavily as tears run down my face.

"What was that? Where was I?" I think to myself as I curl up into a ball and allow myself to cry out my fear, frustration, and relief. By the time I'm done it must have been hours because my entire body is stiff and my joints pop as I get up from staying in one place for so long.

"System, where am I?"I jump as it answers not really expecting it to actually be here with me, let alone answer.

"Host is currently within your own subconscious mind. After sing the remainder of your life forse, host vital signs cease their function. System used a reward gained from the competeion of a hidden mission to refil the lost life force and restore vital functions"

"Oh, ok...HOLD UP I WAS DEAD!!!!"

"Correct. System is currently calcuting experience gain and updating stats. Host will not regain coniousness until your physical body has healed and calculations are complete."

"So I guess we're just glossing over the dead thing. Fine, how long until I wake up?"

"Approximately, one hundred fifty years."

"Recommend host allow system to run a hearing diagnostic to correct apparent hearing loss."

I feel my blood boil as I spit threw gritted teeth, "No need. I can hear just fine."

"Understood, should host start to how signs of hearing loss again....."

"NO NEED!!!" I shout, interrupting the system. I take few deep breaths to calm down, "Show me what you have on my stats right now."

"Currently only the completed hidden missions, system additions, and one learned skill are available for view. Please, read them at your leisure. Keep in mind all skills are in their original form before first evolution"

A screen pulls up in front me showing a total list of four hidden missions, two system additions, and a Skill.

Hidden Mission: Trust and Love

5exp, +5 Dexterity, Skill: Tracker

Tracker: Place a mark on a target which will allow you to feel which direction they are in. Uses mana to place and with each activation.

Hidden Mission: Leader of the Moonelves

200exp, +20 Strength, +40 Agility, +15 Dexterity, Skill: Truth Seeker

Truth Seeker: Can see through lies at low levels

Hidden Mission: True Priestess

100exp, +20 Wisdom, Skills: Regeneration, Great Shield, Resurrection

Regeneration: Heal minor injuries on user or a target. Uses Mana

Great Shield: Create a shield to protect yourself and your allies. Mana cost dependent on sizeof shield and damage taken

Resurrection: Bring the dead back to life. Target can not be dead for more then 30mins. Costs 200mp per use. Can only designate one target at a time

Hidden Mission: Great Resolve

100exp, +40 Agility, +20 Dexterity, Skills: Fear Resistance (Passive), Minor Transport

Fear Resistance (Passive): Fear will not over take your mind so long as the enemies fear skill level is not higher then your resistance level.

Minor Transport: send a target a short distance away. Can designate only one target, cannot use on living things. Uses 50mp per use.

System Additions: Priestess System and Kingdom System

Pristess System Unlock rewards:

200exp, +30 Wisdom, +10 status points, +4 Skill Points, Item: Ring of Moonlight

Ring of Moonlight: Grants one miracle every hundred years

Kingdowm System Unlock rewards:

1000exp, +80 Wisdom, +20 Intelligence, +8 Skill Points, Item: Crown of Twilight

Crown of Twilight: Grants an additional 20% to all stats and gives an imposing aura that strikes fear into opponents winker or on par with user causing a debuff of 20% user stats

Learned Skill: Scarlet Moon

"AWESOME! OH MY GODDESS! THIS IS SO COOL!" I scream as I'm jumping up and shaking side to side like a little kid.

"Calculations complete updating status. Now beginning calculation for skill evolutions."

"Oh, wow.....I really only have 5 points of HP left. Yeah, dying really checks out now that I can see it for myself." I wanted to be happy about how high my level went but seeing my HP really poured cold water on any bubbling excitement I may have had.

"System, how much time as past in the real world?" It cant have been that long. 158 years isn't exactly something you blink away.

"Notice, Host has been asleep for 78 years, 2 months, 6 days, 7 hours, and 42 minutes."

"WHAT!! Why!"

"Healing process can not begin until system update is complete. Also host soul was trapped in the Void for approximately 72 years before escaping."

"So that means the update and healing process really takes 86 years. Why was my soul in the void?"

"Host placed a curse on the human mercenaries to face eternal suffering within the void. Shortly after the last human died so did host. As the entrice to the void was still open at that time, host soul was also sucked in. System used a mission item to revive host however it did not have the power the bring Host's soul out of the void. Item could only give host a door. If Host had not reached the door before being captured by a void beast then Host would have experienced the same enteral torment as the humans Host had cursed"

I feel cold sweat run down my back as I shivered, thinking about the abomination I had seen.

"Ok, moving on before I have another mental breakdown. What can I do while I'm healing?"

"As this is the Hosts subconious, Host can do most anything. Host needs only think of what they want and it will appear however only if there is a memory of the item."

"Oh, really?" I close my eyes and think really heard about a big fluffy bed. When I open them again, there it is right where I imagined it.

"What about food? WAIT!? Does this mean I can eat all the fast food and juck food I want from my old world without gaining weight?" I picture a dinning table filled with all kinds of foods from my favorite fast food places, McFinnly's, York Fried Chicken, Whatasandwich, Star coffee, Supersonic, and so many more. When I opened my eyes it was all there looking delicious and fresh.

I wipe the drool from my face as I sit down reaching for the McFinnley Burger first. I take a big bite and practically moan as an all too familar taste assaults my taste buds. I start crying as I eat. "Finally something other then milk. I dont know if I could have gone through so many years without real food. Mom's milk was filling but....it was so tasteless and the aftertaste it left in the back of my mouth was.... sigh"

Maybe a baby who had never tasted anything else wouldn't have minded but I'm an adult inside, an adult that had tasted real food. I shoved food into my mouth as I continued to cry. When I tasted the beautiful necture of my favorite drink Dr. Bell, I cried even harder almost choking as I ate.

Imagine having to eat nothing but liquifed nutral loaf multiply times a day, everyday and if this hadn't happen I would have had to do that for almost 10 years. Is it weird I feel greatful this happened now....Oh well, better not to think about it with good food right in front of me.

".....Sigh. It was a figure of... No. Know what, nevermind. Food is more important."

I completely let loose as I eat all my favorite foods with each turning into a recipe in my head to use later. I take special care to also eat some things that really aren't meant to be eaten raw like flour, sugarcane, and many others too, of course I follow that with other good food until the system is done calculating.
