Chapter 10: Oceania - Polynesia

Warning: Fishing

Three days later I arrived on a green, grassy island. A woman with brown skin, hair, and eyes wearing a short, red shirt, a green grass skirt, and a necklace made out of pink flowers approached me. "Are you lost?" She questioned. I nodded. "Here, you can come home with me.". She took my hand in her hand and led me to a grey, stone house.

Inside, there was a man with brown skin, hair, and eyes wearing a green grass skirt, and a necklace made out of white shells and a girl with brown skin, hair, and eyes wearing a green grass skirt, and a necklace made out of yellow flowers.

"Ahola, my name is Kanoa and this is my wife, Leilani and daughter, Moana." He explained. Leilani and Moana waved.

"Aloha" Moana greeted me.

"Aloha" I replied.

"Should I get going on dinner?" Leilani questioned. We nodded.

About an hour later, Leilani had dinner ready. It was fish and litchi fruit. The fish was good, the litchi fruit was sweet. After dinner, it was time for bed. I got ready for bed. I got out my journal and began to write.

6/11/1628

Dear Journal,

Today I arrived in Polynesia. I am living with a family of three, Leilani, Kanoa, and Moana. I really hope I can stay here.

Sincerely,

Arianna

I put my journal beside my bed, laid down, and went to sleep.

Three weeks later, it was time for the lantern festival in Corona. "I'm going to a festival in my hometown." I announced after I finished my breakfast of coconut milk.

"Okay, have fun." Leilani told me.

"I will!" I replied as I ran out the door and to the ocean. I jumped on my raft and headed to Corona.

I arrived in Corona an hour later. The baker was selling cupcakes at his booth in the street. People were dancing and making chalk art in town square. Some people were also selling flags, dolls, and other souvenirs along the sides of town square in wooden booths.

I went over to the baker's brown, wooden booth. "Can I have a coconut cupcake?" I asked him. The plump, red-headed baker nodded. He handed me a yellow cupcake with white frosting. "Thank you so much!" I told him.

I went into the town square and spun around. The people in the market cheered. I smiled.

I went over to the chalk art station. I outlined baby Rapunzel with the black chalk. I colored her skin with tan chalk. I drew her eyes with the white, green, and black chalk. I colored her lips and gave her some blush with the pink chalk. I colored her dress with purple chalk. I stood up and wiped my brow. "Hey, she drew a picture of the Lost Princess!" A man with tan skin, brown hair, and eyes, wearing a white shirt and brown pants announced. I smiled.

Suddenly, I heard a strong, male voice announce: "To the boats!". I rushed to the docks.

I rowed into the middle of the ocean. As soon as we got to the middle of the ocean, I noticed lights arising from the island. I just watched the lanterns for the rest of the night.

That night, after I got back to Polynesia, I got out my journal and began to write.

7/4/1628

Dear Journal,

I went back to Corona today for the Lantern Festival. Again, like last year, nobody recognized me and I didn't get caught. I had a coconut cupcake. It was good. I danced in town square. I drew a picture of baby Rapunzel with chalk. I saw the floating lanterns! I hope Rapunzel sees them and knows to come home.

Sincerely,

Arianna

I put my journal beside my bed, laid down, and went to sleep.

Two months later, Leilani, Kanoa, Moana, and I were at a luau, a hula dance party. The party was on a green, grassy Island. There were brown, wooden torches with glowing orange and yellow fires on top of them around the island to light up the dark night. I shifted my hips from the left to the right a waved my arms to the side. I spun.

That night, after dinner, it was time for bed. I got ready for bed. I got out my journal and began to write.

9/4/1628

Dear Journal,

Tonight I went to a luau, a hula dance party. It was fun.

Sincerely,

Arianna

I put my journal beside my bed, laid down, and went to sleep.

Three months later, I found Moana by the ocean. She was holding a white fishing net made of vegetable fiber in the ocean. "Hi, Anna, I think my net is full, do you want to help me pull it in?" She questioned. I nodded. We pulled it in. "Good job, Anna!". I smiled.

That night, after dinner, it was time for bed. I got ready for bed. I got out my journal and began to write.

12/25/1628

Dear Journal,

Tonight I went fishing with Moana. It was net fishing, so it was more fun than regular fishing.

Sincerely,

Arianna

I put my journal beside my bed, laid down, and went to sleep.

Three months later, I found Leilani in the green, grassy garden.

She was sitting on her knees holding something that looked like a brown ball in front of a square patch of brown dirt. "Anna, do you want to help me plant a coconut tree." She questioned. I nodded. She dug a big hole in the tan sand. I got down on my knees and rolled the giant seed in. She covered up the hole.

That night, after dinner, it was time for bed. I got ready for bed. I got out my journal and began to write.

3/17/1629

The Dear Journal,

Today I planted a coconut tree with Leilani. I got to roll the seed in.

Sincerely,

Arianna

I put my journal beside my bed, laid down, and went to sleep.

Three months later, I found Kanoa outside craving a face out of grey stone with a white, bone chisel. "Can I try?" I questioned. He nodded. I grabbed a white, bone chisel and craved a dolphin out of the grey piece of stone in front of me.

"Good job Anna." He praised me. I smiled.

That night, after dinner, it was time for bed. I got ready for bed. I got out my journal and began to write.

6/17/1629

Dear Journal,

I craved a dolphin out of stone today with Kanoa.

Sincerely,

Arianna

Two months later, Moana was painting a pink tropical flower on top of green leaves. She looked up from her painting. "Oh, hi, Anna, would you like to paint something?" She questioned. I nodded. I sat down on a brown, wooden stole.

I dipped my hands in the pink paint. I pressed them up against the white canvas. I dried my hands with the dirty, brown rag. I dipped my fingers in the purple paint. I pressed them up against the canvas in between the fingerprints of my pink handprints. I dried my hands with the dirty, brown rag. I dipped my index finger in the brown paint. I pressed it up against the canvas in between my pink handprints. I dried my hand with the dirty, brown rag. I dipped my index finger in the yellow paint. I pressed it up against the canvas on the pink and purple wings several times. I dried my hand with the dirty, brown rag. I took a brown paintbrush and dipped the end of it in the black paint. I painted a smiling face on the butterfly. "Yay Anna!" Moana cheered. I smiled.

That night, after dinner, it was time for bed. I got ready for bed. I got out my journal and began to write.

9/4/1629

Dear Journal,

Today I painted a fingerprint butterfly with Leilani.

Sincerely,

Arianna

I put my journal beside my bed, laid down, and went to sleep.

One month later, I and Moana sat down for a breakfast of litchi fruit. After we finished, Leilani made an announcement. "The wayfinders found another island. Your dad and I think that it would be better there.". Moana split out her coconut milk. We all just stared at her.

"Sorry, I just need to process the news." She explained. She got up. She walked outside. I ran after her.

Moana walked over to a green, grassy hill. I followed her. She sat down. I sat next to her. "Hey, did you know that when I was only a little older than you, I had to flee my home?" I questioned. She looked at me. "When I was 17 years old and pregnant, I was in an accident and got very sick. My best friend was against finding the cure, but they found the cure, and I had a little girl, but she got kidnapped.". My eyes watered with tears from the memory. Moana hugged me.

That afternoon, when we were on the tan, wooden boat, with a tan, leather flag, I got out my journal and began to write.

10/4/1629

Dear Journal,

Today, me, Leilani, Kanoa, and Moana left Polynesia for a new island. Moana was unsure about the idea, but I comforted her.

Sincerely,

Arianna

I put my journal down and look up at the sky.
