Chapter nine

Luther POV

I order Laura Angel into the house, not that she listens to me. She is reluctant. She wants to protect her people. I understand her pain, but that is a burden she should let me carry for her, at least for now when she is in so much danger. If the wolves went so far as to kill her parents, they would come for her too. I do not want to lose her or her tribe.

I did not tell Laura she was in danger. I did not want her to worry or fret any more than she already is now. I know taking on the burden of being the Queen is a lot for her, but there is no doubt in my mind she can do it. The wolves Sammie described are vicious. I do not understand why they would be after the Fairy tribe. They are usually guns for hire. Who in the hell would want to harm the Fairy tribe? Who would hire them?

I have no idea how this will work between us. She is the queen of the fairy tribe and me the Alpha, but I love her, and I will do anything to make it work between us. I just cannot let my ego get in the way. The pack and the order of the pack will have to function a little differently, that is all. Will the wolves allow that? I have no idea, but I am willing to try for her. I am being stupid; my pack loves her. My mother is delighted with her.

The little tink Sammie stays close to me. She is nervous. I cannot blame her after everything that has happened tonight. "Are you okay, little Sammie," I ask her.

She nods her head. "Yeah, I will feel better when I am back with my sister. I only wanted my queen to know what I saw," Sammie says.

I smile at her. "You did the right thing, Sammie. We need to know how to defend the tribe and who is coming for our queen," I say to her.

Sammie stops flying and flutters in place. "Alpha Luther, will you protect us? Queen Laura will need your help. She is new to this and will need help protecting us," Sammie says.

"I promise to keep you safe and your sister safe, Sammie. I will keep all the fairies safe. I will not let anything happen to any of you or queen Laura," I say to her.

My promise seems to please her. We arrive at the cabins where the fairies that survived are staying. There are not very many that survived. Poor Laura, I know this is hard for her. I could not imagine losing my pack to something so awful. I make sure Sammie makes it back to her sister before talking to the wolves guarding the cabins.

"Argo," I call to one of my wolves. He comes to me fast, leaving his post with another wolf to keep secure in his absence. Argo is always on his guard. He is the best wolf to look after the tribe.

"Yes, Alpha," He says. Argo is a more giant wolf than most of the wolves in the pack. His father was from another pack. When his father and mother married, they decided to stay with his mother's pack. I am damn glad they did. Argo and his brothers are enormous and very intimidating.

"I need you and all of your brothers watching the tribe. Some rogue wolves are lurking, and I think they might attack. Send your oldest brother to the house. I need him to help me tonight," I say.

He nods his head. "Yes, Alpha, I will get all of them up here and send Ando to your house," Argo says.

I go back to the cabin Sammie is in with her family. I peak into the window. She sees me and waves. I wanted her to know she is safe, and she seems to understand that she is safe. I have to return to Laura soon, but I need to secure the tribe for her first. It will put her at ease if she knows they are secure.

I wait for Argo and his brothers to return before I leave the fairy tribe. Sammie peaks out the window watching me from time to time. Argo finally comes back with seven of his brothers. "Where is Ando?" I ask him.

"I sent him straight to your house, Alpha," Argo answers. His brothers take positions in front and back of the cabins. One of his brothers goes into the woods to watch from a distance.

"Good job," I say to him.

I start walking back to the house. I can see the smoke and fire from the fairy tribe lands. I hope there is something left in the morning for Laura. It will break her heart if every single thing she has inherited is gone. I know her heart is already broken, but if there could only be a little bit of her former life left, then she might can restore her broken heart.

I step upon the porch. Ando is waiting for me. Laura is still sitting outside. "I asked you to go inside. Wolves are trying to kill you, Queen Laura," I say to her.

"I wanted to wait for my husband, Alpha. Plus, I do not take orders very well," she snaps back at me.

I cannot help but laugh at her. Her attitude is something else. She is giving me hell, but I guess I deserve every bit of it. "I guess that is okay, Queen," I say to her.

"Ando here is keeping me company. I have him to watch over me while I wait," Laura says.

"I can give the two of you privacy if you need me to leave," Ando says.

"No, no, Ando, I need you out here. I am taking the queen inside, where it is safe. Like or not, she is going inside," I say.

"Oh, really, Alpha," Laura says.

"Oh really," I say to her.

I smile at her and then scoop her up out of the chair she is sitting in on the porch. Laura slaps me on the chest, laughing. "Put me down, Alpha," Laura screams.

"Nope, I said you are going inside, and I mean it, my queen," I say to her. I smile at her. It feels like we are going to be okay finally. I lean in and kiss her.

"I love you, Alpha," Laura says to me.

"I love you, too," I say to her.

I carry Laura into the house and start up the stairs with her. We are giggling. I am happy to see her smile and look joyful.

"I should not be happy right now. I just lost my family, and my tribe is displaced. I should be miserable and mourning with my tribe," Laura says.

"You can be a good queen, grieve for your family, lead your tribe, and still be happy, Laura. I know what happened tonight was horrible, but we deserve to be happy," I say to her.

"Can we be? Can we do all of this together?" Laura asks me.

"I think so. I am willing to try. Are you?" I ask her.

"Yes. I think we both need to work on communicating with each other, Alpha," Laura says.

"Yes, we do," I say to her.

I set Laura down next to the bed. "You want to take a shower? Do you need me to fix you something to eat? What does the queen need?" I ask her.

"I need my Alpha," Laura answers.

"I need my queen," I say to her. I lean down and kiss her. I think we will be okay.
