Chapter Twelve

It was Jake.

He was bleeding badly from a cut in his forehead. His nose was bent at an awkward angle and bloody. He opened his eyes and seeing me, weakly smiled.

Suddenly, Andrews kicked him in his face. Before I could do anything, Derick and Carter also ran to him and suddenly all three were kicking and cursing at him.  Andrew raised his hand and motioned something with his fingers and the entire circle of people around us closed in on him and joined in their kicking fest. As far as I could see, they were all kicking him hard in every possible region that they could access.

Suddenly, Jake cried out in pain. That was enough for me. I walked up to them and shoved the boy I found nearest to me hard enough, for him to fall to the ground. The hall became quiet except for Jake. They all stopped hurting him and took to staring at me. He was whimpering in pain like a hurt puppy. It hurt my heart to see him like that; to hear his cries. Everyone around him looked at the guy on the floor and then at Andrews who stamped on his hand and he screamed out loud. A blood curdling scream. Andrews smirked at me.

"MOVE BACK YOU FUCKING FAGGOTS!!!", I screamed at the top of my voice before running up to Jake and helping him sit up. He was breathing hard and coughing. I sat down beside him and he leaned against my shoulder. The boy looked like he was half dead. The people around us were still. Just watching. Not a single soul even tried to help. Their attitude angered me so much that I decided to take matters into my own hands.

"Jake", I whispered. He opened his eyes to look at me and closed them again. "I am going to pull you by your shoulders and make you lean on this wall right here. Is that okay?", I asked. No response. "Jake, will you be able to lean against that wall if I pull you over and not fall? I will drag you up to the wall by your shoulders if it's okay with you. Just nod for an okay or shake your head if you think it's going to be painful or difficult. Okay?," I pressed again. He opened his eyes and nodded slightly.

Relieved, I stood up. Jake lifted his hand feebly to support his neck which was swollen. I walked over to. behind him, knelt over and reaching under his arms, I. grasped the loose clothing under his shoulders and supporting his head against my arm, I slowly stood up. Then I slowly walked backwards, side stepped when I reached the wall and helped him support his back against the wall. I removed my backpack, kept it beside him, ruffled his hair, walked over to Andrews and spat at his shoe.
