The only thing that separated him and the creature was a tree. But, the tree was against him.

The demon collided with it, easily striking it down, right where Damion had been, midair. He was like a marble, tossed when the tree was brought down so effortlessly. Derek and I watched as he fell from the harsh blow. It almost knocked him out of his consciousness.

Damion crashed into an opposing tree, grunting. Derek's impulse kicked in. Quickly, he placed me on a random stable branch, and I kept my balance, jumping onto nearby branches that reached further from the scene.

I looked back to see Derek scooping down to collect the boy, who was slowly regaining consciousness. The large creature hadn't shown itself yet, giving them time to recover. My heart raced at the sudden silence it left with us. Damion had struggled to get up with the help of the older, I could barely see them in the darkness.
