Chapter Nine

Prowling through the undergrowth in front of me, Reeve reminds me of a true hunter. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone crouch and prepare for a pounce the way he does, and I watched Sapphire hunt mice in Joseph’s house. She’s excellent, but Reeve is a level above.

Keeping his body close to the ground, he turns his head to the side, sniffing the air. I hear a rustle. His eyes seem to gleam as he spots a feathered body through the leaves.

I know that because I see it too, but, by the time I’ve registered what it is, Reeve has darted forwards. His red body becomes a blur.

A second later, however, the bird flaps desperately out of the bush and Reeve slinks back around to me. The gleam is gone from his eyes. I tilt my head to the side, wondering what went wrong since, from my perspective, he did everything right.
