Chapter Eleven

Within the fray, I force myself to focus. A red body blurs beside me. The fox nicknamed ‘Red’. He saved me—now I can repay the favour.

I know how these fights go. Hot-headed cats with their claws drawn. A fox, too. Nothing good will come out of this.

So I circle him and hiss at the surrounding alley cats. One of my paws swipes at them, but I'm not surprised when it doesn't connect with their bodies. They jump away immediately before closing in on us again.

I'm not sure what I'm doing. They've probably got this fight figured out from start to end. There's a sort of electricity between them, leading me to believe they all know exactly what they're doing. Every step appears to be orchestrated as they move around us like vultures.

"What's wrong, old man?" The queen asks, with a note of sarcastic sympathy in her voice. I hiss back, not wasting words on her. "Can't handle a fight anymore? Too tired? Need a nap?"
