Chapter 33

Cedric reached out and touched the rough, brown bark where the Mother met the earth. Night had fallen in Da'nu, and the glowing flowers and leaves had all opened around the Temple of the Mother, a hand-laid, stone-block floor that circled the whole base of the tree. A bronze archway, tall enough for even a dragon to pass through, stood regally against the trunk, ancient words and symbols engraved into its surface.

Behind him, a small fire had been set up, and their three tents stood around it. The dwarves had slept through almost the entire trip up the hill and sat next to the fire, wrapped in a colorful woven blanket, sipping on Jar'ra's tea. Their eyes were yellow and bloodshot, and their skin was a sickly green, so dried and cracked that it had bled in places.

The two horses and Snow Bringer stood together in the colorful bushes and flowers, partially grazing but mostly falling asleep under the Mother's shadow.
