'And you found this by the child, lying on the ground?' Carrington turned the journal over in his veiny old man's hands.

'That's right,' I replied. 'And I took a reading out by Sector Six. Nothing could've survived out there for that long–the hours between the receipt of the thermal imaging report and our initial sighting. Especially not a small…' I trailed off, finding it hard to refer to whatever we found out there in human terms.

'There was no clear breach of the perimetre? No signs of forced entry? Burrowing? Any excavations of any kind?'

I shook my head.

'Hmm, I see.' Carrington's furrowed brow knotted. 'If that's the case, the child must've come from the Facility.'
