The global population has been decimated by a deadly synthetic virus. At the last known survivalist outpost, Dillon comes across a hideously disfigured mutant child. By its side is a journal, documenting Agent Ransome's journey to meet controversial scientist Professor Zaragoza at his research facility. When the mutant regenerates, attacking their colleagues, infecting them with a deadlier strain of the virus, Dillon and Grainger are forced out into the exclusion zones in search of Zaragoza's facility.

'So let's break things down,' I said to Grainger, once back in the transporter. 'If the camps we stumbled upon really were recent camps, then some life form, most probably of human origins, has found a way of surviving out here in the outback. And if that really is the case, then it would appear that he or she or whatever it is has a liking for Zykill flesh. Therefore, is it possible for a human to eat mutant children? Would it not poison or contaminate them?'


   'Well, it's possible, Dillon. I mean, for generations, Third World countries sustained themselves on genetically modified crops. Most meat products were pumped full of artificial preservatives. So I see no reason why somebody couldn't survive eating the flesh from a Zykill child. They are, after all, part human.'
