SOMETHING GOOD.

CHAPTER 9

***SETHRONY***

It’s been a week since the interview. My heart has been racing at every notification I receive.

“Sethrony!” I hear a familiar voice call out. I open my eyes and wait. Rolling off my back, I walk sluggishly and open the door.

Lucia looks at me from the other side of the open door. Her eyes always catch me off guard. She has the clearest blue eyes I have ever seen.

They make me want to drown in them and seek the aura of peace and comfort they have. They gaze into your soul and see all your secrets. “Hey sweetie, how are doing today?” she asks sincerely.

“Okay.” I lie “just hoping for the best.” I am earnestly hoping for the best. This was the only Job that had a very good pay and would help me make up for everything dad stole.

Don’t get me wrong, I might have been lacking in a lot of things, I just thought I would have a chance.

“aww baby, come here.” She pulls me into her arms. I lean into her shoulder. I almost ball my eyes out thinking how useless I am to such a great family. Not even my grandparents wanted me because they hated my father.

My dad never got to know his parents. He was raised in foster care and later adopted by a wonderful couple at the age of 11. Dad said they loved him till the ends of the earth but the end came too soon, dying in a house fire when he was 19. He only had mom as family after that.

Lucia leads me to the bed and sits me down. She brushes the hair off my face “baby, it’s okay if you didn’t get it. We can always look for another job.” She says trying to comfort me. I don’t answer.

She rubs my back and whispers words of comfort to me. She lets out a heavy sigh and gets up heading towards the door. “Don’t starve yourself and come down for lunch okay”, she waits for m response.

“okay, I’ll be down in 10.” I give her a smile before she walks out the door.

Going back to my bed, I roll on my back and Stare at the ceiling. It makes me think better. Arranging my thoughts in a column, crossing out the impossibilities and possibilities.

I scoff at myself, I’m never going get that job. I remember some candidates for the interview. They looked perfect with their resumes and all I had was a piece of paper showing I graduated from high school. Nothing more to show .

My phone chimes. Not another useless notification. Turning on my phone, I swipe up see my newest notifications. Subscription plan, I swipe, spam mail, swipe. Dear miss stone. I pause. Time for judgement to be passed. Reading the email, my eyes almost pop out.

SMITH HOUSEHOLD

I got it!!!! I want to scream to the top of my lungs. I can’t believe I actually got it. I bolt out of the bedroom and run to the dining room. I see Lucia and run to her. I wrap my arms around her and let the floods run. She’s shocked at the sudden outburst but accepts it anyway. I cry tears of joy on her shoulder for as long as I can remember.

Finally, something good.

DAY OF INTERVIEW

***Charles***

“So tell me about yourself.” I look at the familiar face as she takes a seat. Only once have I seen such luscious ebon hair. The book store girl.

I remember that day vividly. Okay, some parts of it, I spent most of it looking at her. She had such beautiful hair, such pristine skin. Her lips hold a shade of dark red lipstick.

Trying to look more mature, like a teenager in big girl shoes. Her lips kept on moving. I have no idea what she’s saying but I could keep this up for a long time.

She’s stopped speaking.

“Huh?” I say unconsciously. Dumbass! I internally smack my face. She was introducing herself. Play it off.

“I’m done sir.” She looks disappointed. Thinking I haven’t heard a word. I haven’t, but that’s not the point.

“Alright, I’ll get in touch with you. Thank you for your time.” I keep a poker face.

She slides out of the chair and grabs her bag on her way out. Before she leaves, she holds the door open and turns back.

“I’m sorry for saying this, I may be mistaken,” she fidgets around a little “Have we ever met?” she waits for my answer anxiously.

I don’t want to jinx it, so I’ll keep it as it is.

“NO.” I grab onto my phone to seem uninterested. “I highly doubt that.” My poker face still on.

“Oh. I apologize” she grabs the door handle and shuts the door behind her.

I sit still in my chair and look through her resume. Not much. High school graduate, didn’t do much after that. Should I give her a chance?

James would have a fit if he knew I hired someone without experience. Not like he’d really care anyway.

Anyway. Sethrony, let’s be perfect strangers, shall we. I grin to myself.
