The catacombs widen past the crypt, and you and Emma are able to walk side-by-side. Though the passage splits numerous times and twists, you quickly determine each path. Several hours have passed from when you first set foot on the stairs beneath the chapel, and thirst and fatigue are beginning to set in. A cool breeze wafts through the halls, and a shadow covers catacombs. The smell of fresh, moist earth pervades the air. Your feet hurt from walking, and you hope to find the exit soon.

As you walk, you hear movement in a side room: the rustling of stones and gravel across the ground, the clattering of something metallic hitting stone. You and Emma tense. If it is a zombie, there are few options to escape or defend yourselves. The halls are so narrow that it would be nearly impossible to outrun a hungry zombie. The pistol crossbow provides only a few shots. You would be at an extreme disadvantage in defending yourself and Emma. Being this ill-prepared, you curse yourself for coming to the catacombs without proper supplies.

You creep backward and whisper to Emma to get ready to run. The noise intensifies as you move further away, and you keep your eyes fixed on the sharp right turn leading into the room. You concentrate on your breathing to keep calm. You hold Emma's wrist loosely in case she has to break away. The air is still and humid.
