The man is clearly in agony, and once the pain ends, he'll be damned to life as the undead. You can't stand by and watch that happen.

You raise your fire ax to strike, but a wave of nausea hits you first, forcing you to turn from the man. The image of his still, lifeless body flashes in your mind, and the thought of it sickens you. Can you kill him? Can you be the one to end his life? No matter how humane it might be, you can't bring yourself to do it. Right now, this is a human being, and you won't kill him.

You leave the man and return home, blocking out any thought of the murder you almost committed.

As you head inside and bar the door, you can't help but wonder if you could have saved the man had you done something differently.
