As soon as she smiled at me, I regretted my comment. That smile, I wanted to see it all the time, but I knew it would be impossible. She was just a normal, human girl, and she didn't know anything about my world. She shouldn't have anything to do with me. When the teacher said to turn to the person next to us, I groaned internally, as my wolf, Shadow, howled in excitement.

Why don't you like her? She's our Mate! Shadow said.

Because she could do so much better than me, I replied, With a human.

But just because I shouldn't be with her didn't mean I shouldn't be friendly. So I introduced myself. When she replied, her voice was like wind chimes, and it gave me a shiver. I wanted to hear her talk more. Damn it! I thought. Why couldn't she be just another girl?? Whatever, we can get through this one hour a day, and it will be fine.

"So, here's the equation. I think what we do first is…" she started, turning her notebook to me. Her handwriting was exquisite. Loops and lines, in dark purple ink. I looked at it for a while.

"I hate math, too," she said with a slight laugh, "But I want that laffy taffy." Of course she was joking, but her wanting something compelled me to want it more, just to get it for her.

"We'll get it," I said. "Can I see that?" I took the notebook from her. I hated math, but I concentrated hard and figured out the problem before anyone else. I got her that laffy taffy.
