The surgery

''Dr. Ozge, I suspect he not only has acute Bronchitis but also acute meningitis. All the symptoms he mentioned just now are related to meningitis but we will have to wait for the test to confirm''

''If that is so, then he might need urgent surgery, right?''

''Mm. When he came, did he come with any family member?''

''No, I don't think so. He told me he stays alone. I was worried about him so before going on the trip, I asked Azra to check up on him. If he is going for surgery, does the hospital have payment plans for such people?''

''I don't think so but I will find out. It is going to be expensive and he doesn't look like he is able to afford it''

''Should I go to Delta Group and meet with the Director? The old man told me that, Delta Group have been dumping illegal waste in their water. They should give some compensation since this is as a result of drinking from that water''

''No. It is dangerous. The Director there is ruthless. The hospital has received a lot of cases and it all boils down to that company but the hospital is powerless because the company sponsors a lot of projects''

''So, we should keep quiet just because they sponsor the hospital? This isn't fair. What about the people who are affected and dying? What about the bad things they are doing? They are just using those donations as cover up''

''Ozge, I get that you find it unfair but you can't fight against such people all by yourself. Delta Group is a subsidy of Amani Group of Companies. They are the second most powerful family after the Almendez family and they are friends to the hospital director's family''

''What?''

''That is why you can't just go and start fighting in a war you can't win. You shouldn't bring yourself out there since you already have a record. Do you understand what I'm saying?''

''Mm, I understand. Fighting will mean exposing myself''

''That's it. Let's just do our job as doctors and leave these people alone. About the surgery, do you want to do it?''

''Can I… do it?''

''If you are confident about it. I can put my position on the line and let you hold the scalpel again''

Ozge chuckled and shook her head, ''no. Let's not put your position on the line. I will call and inform the Neurological department to come and have a look first. As you said, let's not fight a war we can't win''

''Alright, let's go''

….

''The results are in, Dr. Patricia'' Azra spoke when she saw Patricia and Ozge coming towards the patient's bed.

''Let me have a look'' Dr. Patricia took the folder and opened it. She looked at it for a while and passed it over to Ozge and muttered, ''talk about a mess!''

''He… has a growing tumor around his brain and the meningitis has spread through his upper spinal cord going towards his lower brain. If the inflammation reaches the place where the tumor is, then he will have even lesser chance of surviving. This is so unlike anything I've seen before'' Ozge sighed and looked at Dr. Patricia.

''There is only one solution to this but even I am not sure whether that will work or not'' Dr. Patricia spoke.

''Are you thinking of… that is dangerous. No one in this hospital has done it before'' Dr. Anderson who was standing by said as he looked at them.

''Someone has done the joint brain surgery with meningitis before…'' Adams said and turned to look at Ozge.

''I remember the first time I came here, I heard Dr. Ozge and Dr. Logan did a joint operation on a patient with similar situation. The surgery was deemed as the best operation by any doctor and Dr. Logan even won several awards, but because Dr. Ozge was in prison, her name was deleted from the award scheme listing'' Azra spoke.

Ozge noticed their eyes on her and spoke, ''don't look at me like that. I cannot perform any surgery because I do not belong to that department. You can contact Dr. Logan for schedule arrangement''

''What if you get transferred back to your old department; would you be willing to perform the surgery?'' Demit asked, walking towards them with a file.

''What do you mean?'' Dr. Patricia asked. She wasn't particularly interested in Demit nor whatever she did. As long as she didn't disrupt her way of doing things, Patricia wasn't one to meddle in her business. She knew very well who Demit was.

''I can get you transferred back to your former department if you can perform the surgery'' Demit said again.

''Miss Demit, what exactly are you getting at? Since when did you get the right to decide which department to put the doctors under me can join?''

''Dr. Patricia, I was just thinking about what's good for the patient and also Dr. Ozge. She doesn't belong here. She deserves to be at a place where her skills and talent can be used better. She used to be the queen of the Neurological department until she was brought here. I am only suggesting that she goes back to where she belongs. I don't think I broke any rule, right? Dr. Ozge must have missed performing surgeries and all that. Her skills will only turn to rust if she continues to stay here''

''That's true'' Dr. Anderson nodded his head.

''Nurse Demit, I don't care what authority you think you have but let me warn you. You will not meddle in the affairs of the doctors under me. Dr. Ozge will not leave this place until she is ready''

Ozge turned and looked at Dr. Patricia with a suspicious gaze. How did she know she wasn't ready to move back yet? This was something Ozge knew herself but didn't tell anyone else, not even Leyla and Adams.

''What do you mean, Dr. Patricia? A doctor must always be ready…''

''A nurse must not argue with a doctor senselessly, Nurse Demit'' Dr. Patricia replied sharply.

''What is going on here?'' Logan arrived and asked. He looked at Ozge whose gaze was focused on the patient's folder.

''You are here, Dr. Sher. I called you because we have a patient who needs to be moved to your department. His situation is critical so I suggest a surgery immediately''

''What are the odds?'' Logan asked and went closer to the patient. Ozge shifted to the side when she saw him getting closer.

''He has a growing tumor and meningitis that is rapidly spreading from his lower spinal cord to his brain'' Dr. Patricia explained.

''Let me see his folder'' Logan stretched his hand and Ozge placed the folder on his palm. He opened it and studied it for a while before looking up at Ozge, ''let's do it together''

''Huh?'' Ozge looked at him with a shocked gaze.

''You know the doctors at my department aren't as experienced as you. A lot of them admire you and always wanted to learn from you. You will be saving this patient and also impacting knowledge to the junior doctors that are looking up to you''

The doctors and nurses in the ER turned and looked at Ozge curiously. Most of them were new but they had heard about Ozge's prowess when it came to surgery. She was topnotch and they wished to see her perform a live surgery some day for them.

''Dr. Logan, I don't think this is a good idea. Dr. Ozge just came to the ER recently. She is still adjusting to…''

''This is your chance to prove yourself, Ozge. Besides, Ozge was originally from my department. She definitely misses going into the S. R, right?''

''It just so happens that the former director and my grandfather are visiting the hospital today. This is your chance to prove yourself, Dr. Ozge. Who knows, you might get promoted to where you deserve to be'' Demit spoke.

Ozge's hands quivered. She indeed missed performing surgery but she wasn't sure if she could do a good job. She hasn't held a knife in the past 8 months.

''Why is the ER so crowded? Is there something interesting going on here?'' A male voice asked.

''Mummy…'' Amanda ran towards Ozge.

Everyone turned and saw Old Mr. Almendez, Ferit and Old Mr. Suwait walking towards them.

When Ozge saw thee, she immediately lowered her gaze.

''There is a patient in need of urgent surgery and Dr. Logan suggested doing a joint one with Dr. Ozge since she is the most experienced one in the hospital. They have done joint surgery before so this would go down history again. But… Dr. Ozge seem to have doubts about it. I wonder if her skills died when she went to prison or…''

''Demit, that's enough!'' Ferit shouted at Demit.

''You are Dr. Ozge?'' Old. Mr. Suwait asked.

''Yes, sir'' Ozge nodded.

''Ozge, would you perform the surgery for this old man to see? Even though I was here during the time you worked here, I was always out for a meeting when you are performing an important surgery. I would like to watch you perform one for me to see'' George Almendez said as he looked at Ozge's face.
