Etienne pivoted to Julio. “You can read the instructions. There should be no reason why you’d ever have to do this yourself, but it’s good for you to know how, just in case. After we change your dressing, we can have lunch and you can take your pain medication before your nap.


“Dr. Ballard used  absorbable sutures to repair your intestine and staples to close the incision. You will have to keep the area clean, and change the dressing according to Artis’ instructions. We also need to watch for signs of further infection. It’s necessary to exercise due diligence in following Artis’ directions because you had sepsis. I have the sheet of instructions Artis gave me.” Etienne handed Julio a piece of paper with printed directions on how to change a surgical dressing.


To reduce the risk of contagion, keep the area dry for two weeks. Change the dressing daily.
