Chapter 39

“There were dogs but in the beginning, before he got crazy, I used to feed them their table scraps and play with them. He told me not to do that because they were guard dogs. I snuck them stuff anyway until I couldn’t go out anymore.”

“Did they chase you when you tried to get away?” Etienne could still see his red eyes in the mirror across the room.

“They barked and half-heartedly chased me when I left, and one of them grabbed the cuff of my pants, and they ripped, but I called him by his name and he let me go. Despite the dogs and barbed wire, I still managed to climb his seven-foot chain-link fence and get away.” Julio shook more in Etienne’s arms.

“So why do you think you killed him?” Etienne pulled him closer.

“There was so much blood. He didn’t come after me. I didn’t check his pulse or anything, but he wasn’t moving when I left, and I managed to retrieve the key without him waking up.” Julio sobbed.
