“The wolf I was before the gulag would have challenged Rémy. I was very arrogant. You wouldn’t have liked me.” He paused to sip his tea then gave his mate a slight smile. “I have since learned humility. Rémy is a good Second, and Armand runs the council well, much better than the First in Russia. Here no wolves or their mates are in need. That is not the case there. An expression I heard when we first arrived describes the situation here succinctly, ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’.”

Donal laughed. “Too true. Do you think Rémy was afraid you would challenge him?”
