Chapter 5

“Uh, sure.” I pull open the door and step aside so she can enter.

“Thanks.” She disappears down the hall.

I shake my head and stare after her for a few seconds before collecting myself enough to remember to close the door again.

This entire situation demands coffee even if I’m not normally a caffeine addict, but desperate times and all that. I’m in the middle of filling the pot with water when Debora joins me in the kitchen. Alone.

“He’s not here.”

I stare at her as though she’s grown a second head. “What do you mean he’s not here?”

“His bedroom is empty. He’s not in the bathroom. So unless you’re hiding him in your room, he’s not here.”

“Why would I hide him in my room?” I put the pot on the countertop; all the weirdness is making me lightheaded.

He’s not here?

Then where the fuck ishe?

“I’m just saying it’s the only place I haven’t looked.”

“Oh. Okay. But no.”
