I had never seen this before, or what came next. She stood up taller and slapped him right back. “Leave him alone!” she shouted. “And leave me alone too! I told you to stop bothering me and you won’t. Stay out of my room. You’re nothing but a pedophile and I want everyone to know.”

In the sudden silence that followed, the doorbell rang. Pete dropped the dishes he was carrying, and very formal, like a good little butler, opened it and there stood two police officers, one man and one woman. “Is there a problem here?” the man asked, advancing into the dining room. By the woman’s face, it was obvious they had heard every word.
