Chapter 4

“I—I’m just afraid that won’t be enough, Alex.”

Alex didn’t smile. He regarded Ethan so intently Ethan squirmed.

“Please tell me you didn’t mean that,” Alex said quietly, a catch in his voice. “Please tell me we’re okay.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“We’re okay, Alex. Of course we’re okay.”

Alex mouthed the lyrics of his favorite song to calm himself as his heart thumped faster and harder. The night of the last party they attended together played before his eyes.

“You look great tonight.”

What?

It wasn’t whispered in his ear by Cassandra, his supposed girlfriend, nor was it said by him to her. No. It was Ethan. It was Ethan, who, after his grand entrance, immediately wrapped himself all over Alex.

“Ethan, what are you doing?” Alex hissed, forcing a smile toward the flashing cameras and trying to look as if it was something they did every day.
