“What did you get yourself into?”
Alex’s gaze turned hard and cold. “You don’t have any right to judge me. Thank you for coming, though now I’m not sure why I wanted you to come in the first place.”
Ethan was stunned. He’d said the wrong thing and he didn’t know how to undo it. So many things had happened and they felt almost like strangers now.
“No, that’s not true,” he said carefully, hoping that this time his intent came across right. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know what I was saying. I’m so sorry that all this happened to you. I should never have left you.” He brushed Alex’s knee and was grateful that Alex didn’t flinch. “It’s not true that you’re not sure why you wanted me here. You need me, just like I need you. You’ve done the right thing. You’ve done the right thing getting away from that man.”
Alex no longer seemed too angry but his eyes showed something like doubt.
“You can be sure of that. I’ll never leave you again.”
“Uh, what about Lea? And your marriage?”
