Chapter 6

I scrubbed my body with my hands and then submerged myself so I could massage my scalp. When I was sure I’d washed every part of myself I spent a few minutes swimming around the small pool, feeling as though I was the only person on the planet.

Exhilarated and clean, I climbed from the stream. I picked up my trousers and immediately decided I didn’t need to be wearing trousers. Shorts were more appropriate. I tore the bulk of the fabric off until I had fashioned an article of clothing that didn’t look a million miles away from hot pants. After I’d put them on I laughed. Just as well no one was around to see me.

I balled up the scrap material and was going to lob it into the undergrowth when something told me not to. Spare fabric might come in handy for bandages.

“Hello.”

The voice startled me.
