Chapter 11

“Unbelievable,” I said, truly amazed at the man’s agility.

“You got that right,” said Andy, taking the opportunity to kiss me quickly on the cheek.

When Paolo reached the top, he hacked away at the stem of a coconut, sending it plummeting to the ground. It hit with a dull thud. Almost immediately another came hurtling down and another. Eddie picked the large green fruit up and put them in the woven grass bag he’d brought. Back in the village, he’d remove the tough outer husk and get the round brown seed out. The coconut water would be drained into a container and the white flesh eaten with meals.

At that moment a small pig came scurrying into the grove. Its head was down and at first it didn’t see us. But we saw it. I gripped the knife I’d brought and launched myself at the small beast.

“No!” Andy yelled, but I had already slit the beast’s throat.

I looked at Andy, wondering why he had told me no.

“Oh babe, you shouldn’t have done that,” he said.
