Chapter 13

I moved with the crowd, dancing with abandon like I hadn’t done in a long time, probably since I’d broken up with Joey. I decided then and there that I wanted to try again, if he was willing. He was flawed, sure, but so was I. We both deserved a second chance, and maybe a happy ending.

I decided to wait until the event itself was over before approaching him. It was long after the band had finished when I leaned against Joey’s SUV, the only vehicle left on this side of the barn. A bright light shone down on me where I waited, propped up against the driver’s side door so Joey couldn’t miss me when he got there. It was a little chilly, but my coat was warm enough.

I watched Joey walk toward me with his usual swagger. He’d taken off his mask and put his hair up in a ponytail to keep it out of the way. He wore a wool coat over his outfit. He slowed his steps when he saw me.
