Chapter 31

“Believe it or not, it was.”

“And what happened?”

“The guy was cute in so many ways. Thin and athletic. Big on biology and reading. A baseball player who liked center field. One day we were climbing around underneath my parents’ porch, looking for a hidden jar of money left behind from the previous house owners. Toby was next to me like you are now, and I tried to kiss him. The porch was low, just a crawlspace and nothing more. Toby was pretty strong. He grabbed me by the shirt when I went in for a kiss, which pissed him off, and then he actually lifted my upper body off the earth. Six-inch long nails lined the ceiling of the crawlspace, poking through the porch. One went into the back of my skull about a few millimeters. The other sliced over my eyebrow, missing my eye, which I was really lucky about. Unfortunately the eyebrow never grew back.”

Trent continues to finger the broken eyebrow and says, “It’s really sexy, Storm. I’m glad it didn’t grow back.”
