Chapter 14

“I know that, but I’m much older and I want to take care of you. First, you should finish your studies.”

“What? And you pay for everything? No way.”

“If it helps, you can see it as a loan, just like the one you could get from the college but it’d be up to you when you want to pay it. And don’t forget about your mom. The plan’s still to move her to the best hospital.”

Evan stared at him, his eyes misty, gratitude filling them. He opened his mouth but nothing came out. Brian took Evan’s hand again.

“You’re welcome. It’s nothing, okay?”

“It’s not nothing.” Evan’s voice trembled.

“I know you’d do the same if the situation were reversed.”

“I don’t know. I hope so.”

“I know so. Now, we’ll finish our breakfast and pick up your stuff from the motel.”

“Okay.”
